Calif, firm tests new CMV treatment SAN DIEGO (AP)—A California pharmaceutical company has tested a new drug that delays the progression of blindness in AIDS patients and produces no side eflects. Isis Pharmaceuticals presented the results on the drug lasl week in Chicago at the Fifth Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infeclions, a meeting of the world's top AIDS investigators. The drug, called fomivirsen. is under evaluation as a treatment for cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, which eventually leads to blindness in AIDS patienis. The disease is an Infection that progressively destroys the retina. To test the drug, the company treated patients with newly-diagnosed CMV retinitis, and those whose disease was in advanced stages, but had not responded to other treatments. The drug was administered by Injection once a week for three weeks, and once every other week for maintenance. The trials found progressive blindness in palients who had not responded to other drugs was delayed, sometimes up lo almost two years. Those who were newly-diagnosed with the complication did nol suffer symptoms for more lhan a year, and lhe progres sion was slow alter that lime About 20,000 of lhe 250,000 patients with full-blown AIDS in the United Stales sullcr CMV retinitis and potential blindness, according In Isis spokeswoman Jane Green. The reason fomivirsen is more effec- tive than other drugs is because il works al the- gc-netic level to intemipl the process by which proteins involved in human disease are pro duced. she said. Traditional drugs arc- designed lo interact wilh protein molecules that support or cause diseases throughout the body. Antisense drugs are designed to inhibil the production of disease-related proteins. Fomivirsen inhibits the virus that causes CMV retinitis in AIDS patients. The next step for the company is asking the federal Food and Drug Administration to approve the drug as a marketable, medical treatment, Idaho governor axes AIDS drug money BOISE. Idaho (AP)—Gov. Phil Batt is not recommending $700,000 in funding for the federal AIDS Drug Assislance Program because of what he says are adequate contributions from drug companies and federal dollars. Batt said his decision was based on lhe state Department of Health and Welfare's belief that it can fund the program, which helps uninsured AIDS patienis buy medication, by combining state and federal resources wilh the drug companies donations. An expected drop in federal money and callbacks in charitable donations from drug companies forced the department to ask lawmakers for $700,000 lo maintain the program.
