AIDS activist Mary Fisher and HRC National Field Direcior Donna Red Wing headline the Human Rights Campaign's second annual VIP Cocktail reception prior to its Feb. 14 Winter Gala fundraiser. All proceeds from the cocktail reception and gala go to HRC. of Washington. D.C, the nations largest lesbian and gay political organization. Approximately 300 people are expected to attend lhe event. Sat., Feb. 14 at the Wyndham Warwick Hotel. 5701 Main Street. The VIP cocktail reception begins al 6:30 p.in.; dinner at 7:30 p.m. Gala raises $158,000 for AIDS Foundation Houston "Absolutely Fabulous & Off the Wall" was the theme of AIDS Foundation Houston's annual fund- raising gala Jan. 31 at JAGS Decorative Center. About 600 well- At the Absolutely Fabulous fund-raiser for AIDS Foundation Houston were (I lo r) Steven Fenberg of the Houston Endowment, event co-chair Cheni Carbonara, Harold Wolpert, AFH's board chair and event co-chair Ed Smith. turned-out folks helped generate aboul SI58.000 for the foundation. That's about S8.000 more than last year, and counting. The event proceeds contribute a welcome portion of the Foundation's annual budget of about S3.5 million. Nominations due for Pride Grand Marshals On Feb. 17. Ihe Pride Committee of Houston will accept final nominations and will elect grand marshals for Houston Lesbian and Gay Pride 1998. Three Grand Marsha! titles will be awarded. Honorary grand marshal will be an oul gay man or lesbian who has shown outstanding support for lesbian and gay causes. The remaining two titles will be awarded, one each to a gay man and a lesbian. Both must be residents of Harris Country or its surrounding counties and should he seen as a community role model. Potential grand marshals must be aware of their nomination and on hand lo accepl the title in person or have submitted a written acceptance letter to the Pride Committee. Nominations, which must be written, should include a summary of the nominee's qualifications, which mighl address a wide variety of contributions, intlu ding: social, political. health-related, child welfare, education, business, generosity, leadership or civil pride. Nominations should be presented and voting will take place al the next PCOH general meeting. 7-9 p.m.. Tues., Feb. 17 at Ihe Metropolitan Multi-Service Center, 1475 West Cray.
