Compound Item Description
Title [Hymnal]
Date 1300s
Description The leaf probably belonged to a Psalter (Hymnal section) where there are presented hymns proper of the Benedictine order. This specimen bears three hymns with partial music notation: the 4th strophe of the Hymn to Saint Benedict at Lauds, the hymn to be sung at Lauds (May 3rd) for the celebration of the finding of the True Cross, and the Hymn to Saint John the Baptist (June 24th) at Matins. SCRIPT: Italian gothic liturgical book hand. DECORATION: recto. first column: historiated gothic capital O in light mauve, embellished with foliated elements in green and blue and framed in burnished gold ground. Inside the letter is depicted a young person dressed in green, with curly hair and lowered eyelids, in a pose of adoration, embracing the Holy Cross. Seen in the distance is a background of green hills under a blue sky. Recto. second column: historiated gothic capital 'T' in light mauve and green, embellished with foliated elements in blue and framed in burnished gold ground. The letter is nearly filled by the haloed figure of Saint John the Baptist with his usual attributes: beard and camel's hair garment with leather belt. He holds a book, probably the Gospel, on which a lamb, representing the Christ, rests. PLACE OF CREATION: [France].
