Transcript University of Houston 3 801 CULLEN BOULEVARD HOUSTON 4, TEXAS OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT May 26, 1958 Mr. Joseph Norman Manley ll6l Spencer Street Conway, Arkansas Dear Mr. Manley: Your application for admission to our College of Optometry has been referred to me. I appreciate your sincere interest in becoming an optometrist and to study at the University of Houston. However, I must report to you that to date no Negro has been admitted to the University of Houston. The subject of desegregation is a matter of active study on the part of our Board of Governors, but no definitive action can be expected in time for your enrollment this fall. May I suggest that you seek admission to Ohio State University or the University of California, which have fine Colleges of Optometry. I am returning your transcript in case you wish to use it further. Sincerely, Clanton W. Williams President ekr Enclosure
