Transcript 1962 YEARS AGO ^n Remember 1927—a year of wonderful nonsense; a year of great heroes and awesome deeds; a year of golden prosperity and vast optimism? Charles Lindbergh flew the Atlantic, emerging overnight from obscurity to become the nation's hero. Washington's Walter Johnson still reigned as baseball's No. 1 pitcher; the Yankees' Babe Ruth was slugging his way to his 60-homer record; and long-shot Whiskery startled the racing world by capturing the Kentucky Derby. Movies still were silent, but everybody was awaiting skeptically the release of the first sound picture, Al Jolson's Jazz Singer. Janet Gaynor won an Oscar for her acting in Seventh Heaven; and George Gershwin had two musicals on Broadway, Strike Up the Band and Funny Face. Calvin Coolidge and his high silk hat occupied the White House; Nicholas Longworth was the iron-fisted Speaker of the House; and, although U.S. Marines were rushed into Nicaragua and China, everyone was sure that peace, like prosperity, was here to stay. Back in that long-ago summer of 1927, word soon got around Washington that you could get the best root beer in town at a new little place up on 14th Street, near Park Road. The proprietor was a friendly young Westerner, Bill Marriott, and his Hot Shoppe quickly became a refreshing oasis during those hot summer days. Times have changed since then, and that original little Hot Shoppe has grown into a national organization of 103 restaurants, cafeterias, drive-ins and hotels. And you, our customers, stockholders and employees, have played an important part in this growth through the years. Now, on our 35th Birthday, we want to say thank you for making our Hot Shoppes family a tradition in your own families. Hot Shoppes ANNIVERSARY 1927 i»Haint^HHiiiWB8t^itHiHtH»mwt8nH(tn"'
