Transcript TO OUR SHAREHOLDERS: PRESIDENT'S lETTER rHE opening of thirteen hotels in 1963 brings Hilton Hotels Corporation closer to achieving its objective of operating hotels in all vital cities throughout the world. Ten of these hotels were opened outside the United States. Eight additional International hotels are under construction and scheduled for opening in the next two years and thirteen more are in the planning stage. The policy of Hilton Hotels in embarking upon a program of international expansion in 1949 has resulted in an increasing portion of consolidated earnings from International hotels during the last few years. It is expected that the contribution to consolidated earnings of the International hotels will continue to increase in the future. Because most of our international arrangements only require an investment in working capital and inventories, the return on invested capital tends to be much higher than from domestic operations. Since the transformation of Hilton Hotels from an American company with scattered international interests to a multi-national company with a global perspective, Hilton is sought after by domestic and international investors the world over to manage and operate their respective hotels and inns. While competition is not as intense in the international field as it is within the United States hotel industry, strict criteria are being applied to the many proposed ventures. A sufficient number of sound projects are available, however, so that it is anticipated our worldwide network will continue to expand in the foreseeable future. Hilton has developed through the past fourteen years an unparalleled backlog of experience in the international hotel field that permits it to accept only the most carefully researched proposals. Business firms from many countries, which have paralleled the international development of Hilton Hotels and share its global perspective, are patronizing Hilton Hotels all over the world. Hilton is the only hotel system capable of servicing these industrial giants on a worldwide basis. We expect that our strong position in the international field will have an increasingly beneficial effect on domestic operations in the years ahead. A growing number of travelers to the United States become familiar with Hilton Hotels in their homelands. Despite the increase in revenues during 1963, consolidated earnings from operations declined because of keen, competitive conditions in the domestic hotel industry, the effect of the Internal Revenue Service regulations on travel and entertainment expenses and unanticipated initial operating losses in connection with hotels opened during the year.
