Transcript Special Report Behind Marriott Leadership... A Pace-Setting Training Program Marriott Corporation is in the business of satisfying people. That it continues to succeed in making customers happy and running efficient operations can be seen by the growth figures reported to shareholders each year. What is not so obvious is the effort it takes to develop the team behind the numbers. The company has, literally, a million-dollar training program in effect. Its objectives are simple: To improve management and employee skills and attitudes so that (1) the customer is served properly, (2) the operation runs smoothly, and (3) the employee can grow in his job. The program is generally acknowledged as the most extensive in the industry. And it received further impetus in fiscal 1970 with completion of a new Learning Center at corporate headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Learning Center features several conference rooms, audio-visual production and projection facilities, and a library. In fiscal 1970 it was the "school house" for hundreds of Marriott managers, learning to do their jobs better. Seminars, sensitivity sessions, workshops, and conferences were held continuously, lasting from one day to a full week. Marriott structures its management education program informally, and tailors it to every range of responsibility from first line supervisor to executive staff. Special emphasis is being given today to the behaviorial sciences. Food training in particular is centered in fully-equipped workshop kitchens. Manager trainees develop menus, prepare selected dishes, and learn all other requirements to running a successful food operation. One unique approach to training is that of the Fast Foods Division, which runs its own In the workshop kitchen (left), the graphics lab, the classroom ... Marriott's training helps make the big difference- "total immersion" training center. Management trainees work, study, and live as a group, conducting a fast food operation largely on their own. Training does not stop at the manager level. The company has probably the most elaborate on-the-job employee training program in the industry. Each major division creates its own work-and-learn environment, for employees at all levels of responsibility, often lasting many months. At the heart of the training program is an audio-visual capability providing all divisions with the latest in sound and graphics techniques. Special aids to training such as closed-circuit television and filmstrip and tape productions are developed by an internal staff of professionals. A smiling face, a pleasant greeting, a clean property, an attractive serving, an orderly operation . . . these are the products of Marriott's training program—and the signs of a leader in food service/lodging. 17
