Transcript a poor 1969. New operating efficiencies were beneficial, and our expansion into Europe and Latin America, which started in 1967-68, is beginning to show results. Airline meal and service prices in the United States are still low in relation to climbing costs, particularly labor, but our strong industrial engineering program has enabled us to reduce our operating costs and thus improve profits somewhat. In-Flite's year was highlighted by service to the new 747 jet aircraft. We were the first independent caterer to meet the extraordinary food service demands of this giant plane. It is especially satisfying to come up with a good year when so many factors were going against us. We need large sums of money to support expansion, and the high cost of financing has been a continuing problem. We also need large numbers of qualified people to provide those services which keep our customers returning. We won't compro- Net Income (IN MILLIONS) 11.0 (ir^orne before extraordinary items) 8.90 6.05 7.42 5.11 1969 1970 250 200 Sales 315.0 257.4 197 5 146.4 123.9 mise our food and service—so we have the challenge of finding new ways to offset steeply rising wage and benefit costs. In addition, we have had the generally- depressed economy, inflated food and construction costs, and slower progress than anticipated in building volume at the new Fairfield Farm Kitchens commissary. All things considered, we believe this latest in our long series of good years focuses sharply on the strength of our organization. As for the future, we look at the signals and are optimistic for our prospects. In our country today, personal incomes continue to increase . . . people have more vacations and holidays and leisure time . . . dining out and traveling are more popular than ever. All these factors work to our favor. In our industry there are other favorable signs. Hotels oriented to business meetings are in strong demand—and that's the kind of hotel we build. Airport hotels are popular as airplanes increasingly replace autos for intercity travel—and airport hotels are a major part of our strategy. Air passenger miles, and the length of the average air trip, are growing— and this means more airline catering volume. Our growth rates of the 1 960's were near the top of American industry. We see no reason why this past growth rate won't continue in 1 971 and beyond. We express our deep gratitude to the more than 26,000 employees whose tireless efforts, loyalty, and devotion have built your company into the leader it is today. We also appreciate the confidence our many shareholders have expressed in our company. faju*J8?— J. Willard Marriott Chairman of the Board Zii'jtL -z^^Pv^L J.W.
