Transcript Chairman's and President's Message to Shareholders We are pleased to report to you on the work and accomplishments of your management and employees in fiscal 1 970. At the heart of our Corporate Strategic Plan are two basic objectives: Make our business continue to grow, and run our business with a sense of responsibility to our customers, shareholders and employees. In 1970: • We increased sales 22 percent.. . • Profits were up more—24 percent . . . • Almost 60 new units . . . restaurants, hotels, flight kitchens . . . were added to our expanding network of facilities . .. • We began to see the first solid results from our entry into foreign markets . . . • We did more than ever to speed promotion of minorities . . . give employment to the mentally and physically handicapped . . . provide summer work to needy youth . . . engage in a wide range of civic activities . . . support higher education and improve health and promote cultural interests. It was, in sum, a good year. Sales ending July 31 totaled $31 5 million. The year before they were $257.4 million. Earnings from operations jumped to $11.0 million from $8.9 million a year ago, or 89 cents per share versus 74 cents. The number of company operations across the United States, and in several foreign lands, reached 382. A year ago it was 324. We also now have 71 6 facilities franchised by Marriott, up from 633 last year. These are all gratifying numbers. And they reflect a year of hard work by our organization, and by our three major operations— Food Operations, Hotels, and In-Flite Services. Food Operations is our most diverse group, and several of its components did well last year—especially the Fast Foods Division, Big Boy Coffee Shops, Cafeterias, and the Business and Industry Division. Two divisions slipped, however, and that affected total group profits. Hot Shoppes J. Willard Marriott J. W. Marriott Jr. Restaurants were off, primarily because curb service operations are being eliminated. Restaurant Franchising dropped sharply by comparison with the year before. In 1 969 we received most of the initial fees from our Roy Rogers Roast Beef program, but no front fees were recorded in 1 970. Also, a difficult money market has limited expansion. For the second year in a row, the Hotel subsidiary added three new hotels. We opened properties in Boston, at the Crystal City complex in Washington, D.C. and at Dulles International Airport in Virginia. The Key Bridge Hotel in Washington also was expanded with a high rise building. We now have 5,800 hotel rooms—more than half of them opened in just the past three years. And with an occupancy rate that leads the industry, Marriott Hotels, Inc. continues its outstanding performance. Five Marriott Inns were opened in fiscal 1 970, but we expect future openings in this new program to be somewhat delayed because of shortages of long-term capital. In-Flite Services came back strongly after
