In spite of these external problems, we are pleased to report that combined earnings from our three principal operating Groups—Hotels, Business and Professional Services, and Restaurants—were slightly ahead of last year. Recession coupled with a high inflation rate reduced discretionary personal income, thus cutting into dollars available for travel and for dining out. In addition, higher costs—especially in the key areas of energy, food, labor, and advertising/sales promotion —continued to affect profits. It was only through a truly outstanding performance on the part of our management and employees that we
