Transcript Communications The Hotelman's Art Every good hotelman is a man with a finely-honed sense of communication—he is a communicator in the broader meaning of being keenly aware of the attitudes, feelings, needs and desires of the people whom he serves, and has the ability to take decisive action consistent with this sensitivity. This central concept brings a unity and a cohesion to the various activities that comprise Hilton Hotels. It dominates both long-range planning and current operations. For the hotel system manager, the art of communication must begin by locating guest facilities where people want to go and to stay. A large metropolitan hotel in a key location serves as a magnet for national conventions and also contributes to effective community activity. Thus, the hotel serves the purpose of bringing people together under conditions and circumstances where they can improve their understanding of each other. The Hilton Inn program also reflects an awareness of the changing needs and desires of both travelers and residents of outlying areas. The system of International hotels is fostering world understanding through increased international trade and travel. Here the hotelman has to be aware of the differing customs and tastes of people in their native lands. These hotels serve as a valuable addition to community life and aid in bringing in tourists, who, in turn, share their ideas with peoples of these countries. The Carte Blanche universal credit card is a response to evolving attitudes towards personal credit. By removing much of the tedium, it makes travel more convenient and comfortable. As Carte Blanche further stimulates travel, it aids in wearing away the barriers of provincialism. The existence of the Hilton system throughout the country and around the world gives the traveler an orientation which assists in removing his hesitancy to travel. Yet each Hilton Hotel and Inn has a distinctive flavor of its own, in keeping with the area in which it is located. The hotelman moves along in the stream of life, keeping ever alert for the changes that inevitably occur in the world we live in. At Hilton Hotels we believe that good communication is the secret to the building of a large, wide-spread, profitable enterprise. 32
