Transcript fly to the San Francisco airport from New York, check in at the Inn a few minutes later, hold conferences there and return to New York the same day. The Hilton Inns combine the finest features of a downtown hotel with a country club atmosphere. In furthering expansion, we either buy land in choice locations or else make a variety of leasing arrangements, always striving for the best possible return on the capital invested. Financial arrangements were consummated during 1959 to provide funds for the program outlined above. During 1959 Hilton Hotels International brought to ten the number of hotels under its operation. It opened The Nile Hilton in Cairo, Egypt, U. A. R., and leased Las Brisas Hilton in Acapulco, Mexico. The Trinidad, Athens and Amsterdam Hiltons are under construction and work has just started on The Rotterdam Hilton. Facilities of The Istanbul Hilton, our most successful European hotel, are being expanded by a 140-room addition. Contracts have ^en signed for additional hotels in Tokyo, Japan; Rome, Italy; Colombo, Ceylon; Teheran, Iran, and Bogota, Colombia. When these are completed we will have 19 hotels abroad. Hilton Hotels during 1959 continued to pursue intensively its program of developing and applying modern management methods and techniques, looking toward improved personnel selection and training, labor saving methods, advanced planning, forecasting, budgeting, stimulation of weekend occupancy and related activities. Our affiliate, Hilton Credit Corporation, with its Carte Blanche universal credit system, is generating volume for our hotels and is making rapid progress in increasing its cardholders, associated businesses and revenues. The decade of the 1960's appears very promising. In little more than a year's time, commercial jet airliners have been completely accepted by the traveling public. Their greater speed and comfort, combined with the increasing leisure time and better standard of living in many lands, have opened up new vistas of business and pleasure travel. For instance, the Far East, including Australia and New Zealand, has been largely limited to infrequent business trips and military movements. It is predictable that these areas will develop two-way traffic with the United States comparable to that presently existing between this country and Europe. As the world's largest and best located hotel system, Hilton Hotels Corporation stands to benefit from the world-wide acceleration in demand for accommodations. We look to the future with confidence and anticipate that your Corporation's results for the coming year will show an improvement over those achieved in 1959 YEARS ENDED DECEMBER 31 GROSS REVENUE NET PROFIT OR (LOSS) (excluding minority interest) From operations From sale of properties total EARNINGS PER COMMON SHARE* From operations From sale of properties total WORKING CAPITAL AT DECEMBER 31 EARNED SURPLUS AT DECEMBER 31 (excluding surplus reserves) OUTSTANDING STOCK AT DECEMBER 31 (number of shares) First Preferred, Series A First Preferred, Series B (Convertible) Cumulative Voting Preferred Stock, Series A Convertible Preference Common * * Adjusted for the two-for-one stock split in 1956 Figures for the years 1953 through 1958 have been restated and differ from those previously reported due to a change in the basis of consolidation.
