Transcript ON THE TOWN... PHILIP • •-"'^ Greetings Austin: I keep saying spring is here but it keeps on getting cold. I keep pulling my plants back into the house so they won't freeze. Actually, I believe that it's not going to be cold for very much longer. It better not or I'll not have any kind of a tan for SPLASH DAY. At least I have my suit! You know, as I'm writing this column, it's 9:00 pm on Wednesday evening and I get this phone call. It's from some plumber that my landlady dug up to fix a leak in my house. He wants lo come over in lhc next thirty minutes and check it out. I tell him thai would be fine although actually I'm aggravated because I'm trying to write and it's also nine o'clock at night. When he finally gets here all he docs is sort of poke around and then tells me he can't do anything until tomorrow and has lo talk to the landlady first. (I could have told him lhat). To top it off, he's not even cute. I guess I need to have a chat with my landlady. I mean, after all, if she's going to send some weirdo over in the middle of ihe night, she can at least send someone fun to look at. This guy wanted to tell me about the strange places he works, and then started tellinu me about his childhood in Michigan. And no, he could not have one of my beers. I finally had to tell him I was busy and didn't have time to talk. Gee/! Anyway, to completely change the subject, have you noticed that almost all of the Austin bars have patios? To namcihcm: HALL'S, CHAIN DRIVE, THE CROSSING, NEXUS/PETTICOAT JUNCTION, SNllKY'SmADLANDS, SALLY'S APARTMENT, THK 505 and THE PRIVATE CELLAR. I guess it's a statement of how much wc enjoy Mother Earth. JOE PARROT'S birthday party broke in the fabulous new patio bar at THE 505 last Saturday night. You wouldn't believe all the Cuervo Gold and Jagcrmcistcr they went through. ROI.H said it was one ofthe parties ofthe year. THE 505'S new bar will be open this weekend and the GRAND OPENING will happen next weekend, starting on Friday, April 17. The bubbles will abound this Tuesday, April 14, as The 505 celebrates its 6-Monih Anniversary. There will be champagne and strawberries & cream. I just adore champagne. Be sure and slop by for the celebration of a good thing. Around the corner at NEMST-ETTICOAT JUNCTION, DAVIE, MYRA & KATHY are hard at work on their patio. In the plans arc multilevel flower beds, lots of shrubs and plants, and a barbeque pit! Their patio bar should be open by next weekend, Myra said. TONY ROSE is back in town for a spell. His clever act will play the PRIVATE CELLAR this Tuesday, April 14. The following Tuesday, April 21, Tony plays THE CROSSING. I hear his show at the Crossing will be more of an improvisational act wilh the audience choosing which characters they want to see playing different roles. Sounds quite festive indeed. Oh, and by the way, he's added MISS PIGGY to his repertoire. What a sick woman. Austin was again treated by the appearance of BRENT NICHOLSON EARLE. Brent came back to Austin and delivered a wonderfully warm, positive and energetic speech at SNUFFY'S Saturday night. Brent is running 10,000 miles around the U.S. borders to raise money for the NATIONAL NETWORK FOR AIDS and to raise awareness af safe sex. Go Brent! HALL'S held a wonderful fundraiser this past Monday night in which over $700 was raised by PAMELA "THE HEAR" MCCARTHY & TONY ROSF". Tony and The Bear were fantastic! Monday is the return of STEAK NIGHT at THE 505. For S4, you get a steak and all the trimmings. Actually, ROBB calls il "bar employee appreciation night." All you bar employees arc invited so you won't have to dirty your own kitchens! Happy hour prices all night too. BACK TO BASICS is Austin's newest "family" clothing store. They're located at the comer of 6th and Red River, where High Style used to be. Back to Basics is primarily men's casual and sportswear, but I know you girls will love their selection too. I saw some hand-painted shirts that caught my eye. Not only can you find a smart new summer outfit, but you can get your hair cut at their salon! And their prices are quite reasonable. CHRIS, the handsome manager, is quite friendly, as is the rest of his staff. They open at noon today and will keep hours from 12 lo 12 almost every day of the week. It's time to shine up your spurs and collar tips! The TEXAS G AY RODEO ASSOCIATION'S State Meeting will be in Austin Saturday, April 25. The meeting starts off with ;. High Noon Buffet at PETTICOAT JUNCTION. The actual meeting starts at 2pm. That Saturday evening at BADLANDS, BUBBLES LARUE, THE BAPTIST WOMEN (Including »randma), BARBIE DOLL, & MISS EAT STOCK will entertain. My lord, SISSY SQUIRT and RITA DE STARR may be forced in from Dallas for the event. The AUSTIN LATINO LESBIAN/GAY ORGANIZATION is having a benefit at NEXUS this Sunday at 8PM. Money raised will go toward an education forum they are sponsoring. RICK will DJ this event with performers LISA LASHAY, TINA ST. MARIE, TYRA BISHOP, COOKIE, SYLVIA GARZA and others. The CHAIN DRIVE & BADLANDS are both celebrating their 1st anniversaries the weekend of April 23-25. Expect lots of hot leathermcn in town for a couple of wild parties for sure! My sisters MARCIA & CINDY are somewhere cruising around town in the BRADYMOBILE (tramps that they arc!) Too bad I can't be there lo keep an eye on you girls, but you know your studious sister, JAN, is busy at her typewriter doing homework. Homecoming Weekend is here! "BADLANDS/SNUFFY'S UNIVERSITY" selected their homecoming queen last night, who will preside over the rest of the homecoming festivities. Tonight is the pep rally. Tomorrow night the big "JOCKEY SHORTS FOOTBALL GAME" starts at 6:00 on Snuffy's dance floor. This should prove quite interesting. BSU vs. TGRA. The Prom starts al 10:00pm.. Wait until you see the pretty, pretty cheerleaders, I hear TGRA PRESIDENT LYNN CARSON is going to be quite fluffy indeed. Ball gowns will abound tomorrow night at die 3RD ANNUAL SPRING COTILLION at the Shady Springs Party Bam. Advance tickets are available at LIBERTY BOOKS or from any of the hosts. All proceeds go to AIDS SERVICES OF AUSTIN. THE BOATHOUSE is having the WHITE ON WHITE PARTY tomorrow nighl. Remember, Miss manners says it's OK to wear white this late in the season as long as it's tasteful. All white liquor is an special for SI.50. The CELLAR'S beautiful patio is now open and they have a beer and liquor bust on Sunday afternoons. FOXY GEORGE ROXY is cooking fajitas for SI.50 a plate. Wednesdays at the Private Cellar are 50 cent well and 75 cent Corona nights. What a deal. NICOLE is playing al HALL'S every Tuesday night starting April 14. Co-starring wilh Nicole arc LADY PT & TIFFANY R. TATIANA will guesl star ihis Tuesday. Actually, my bar spies tell me Tiffany R might not do die show. I guess we'll sec what turns up. Tonight is PETTICOAT JUNCTIONS HAT PARTY, held every month. Wear a cowboy or cowgirl hat and you get a surprise. Wonder what it is? On Friday, April 24. NEXUS/PETTICOAT JUNCTION has a BLACK AND WHITE PARTY. Wear black and white attire and pay no cover. Retraction time. MARIA'S MARGARITA MADNESS at the 505 doesn't have a cover. The frozen margaritas are S2! Maria was in a tizzy, or is il dizzy! Anyway, she'll serve you up a mean rita every Tuesday evening at 9:00pm. SUZIE, manager of the NEXUS NAUGHTIES left SARAH out of her thank you note last week. Our apologies. Suzic would also like to thank JONT, who was a major contributor to the shows success from sound to publicity, not ot mention her dancing. That's it for this week, but feel free to give me a call at 495-9553 from 11:00 am 'til 5:00pm if you have any gossip or facts that are print-worthy. So, for the meantime, peace, love, safe sex Philip THE AUSTIN MIRR0R(512)473-6811
