FROM THE EDITOR Over me past seven months since the inception of UpDate and throughout its growth and finally its merger with the Nuntius, the "Classified" section has become one of the most popular items around. Since it began with five persoanl ads, the numbers it has now reached is unbelievable. That is because it is something we felt that you the readers wanted. Obviously so, as your continued support of it shows us that you want it. One question frequently asked is "are the ads real?". I can personally guarantee everyone is real. We forward your letters, which is first class mail, every ad has to be real. Otherwise prosecution for mail fraud would come into the light. We can guarantee every ad to be authentic as it has been submitted to us . However we cannot guarantee every an~wer will receive a reply. If you do have this problem of not receiving an answer, please let us know. After we h_ave received three written complaints on any ad for no reply, that ad is pulled and cancelled. The only way we can know if y~:,u are not receiving an answer, 1s by your letting us know. For your protection and ours we can guarantee that each ad has been properly submitted and is on file at our office. For us to further help you, please le_t '!s kn_ow if you encounter an):' ~f1cult~es in answering or receiving rephes from ads. Together we can guarantee your protection. Your c<Jmments and questions are always welcome, the more I receive the better I feel. First, a letter asking what the significance of colored handkerchiefs in the back pocket brought a few responses. I received a card from the Leather Back Inc. (D.C's only leather and toy store) that explains the hanky color code in full. Second, the column from Dec. 19-26 drew quite a few responses. l have comments from one of the better letters received. Red hanky - left pocket, fist fucker, right, fist fuckee. Mustard - left, wants big one, right has 8" or more. Robins Egg Blue - left, 69er, right anything but 69. Navy- Blue - left, fucker, right, fuckee. Light Blue - left, expert cocksucker, right, needs CS. Orange - left, anything, anytime, right, nothing, now. Yellow - left, golden shower, passer, right, golden shower, receiver. Drab Olive - left, Army or Marine corps, right, likes same. Green - left, hustler, selling, right, trick, buying. Brown - left, shitter, right, shittee. White - left, masturbate, self, right, same others. Grey - left, into bondage, right, desires .bondage. Black - left, whipper, right, what else? Whippee! Dear Aunt Sofa, In reference to your "comments from readers" Dec. 19-26 issue I think that at times the Gay Life is a frustrating situation, perhaps a discouraging problem sometimes, too. I would prefer to know a person just a little bit before having sexual relations. Without knowing a person first, I feel I might get the same sexual satisfaction in paying a prostitute for sex. It seems more of a superficial sexual experience if I don't know the person first and to me has no real meaning or understanding on both partners. I feel I might as ~II be getting it on with an animal. I cannot be as cold and thoughtless as some "People are. I would never be interested in just a " quickie sexual relationship" myself. Sincerely, One of your steady readers. Dear Mel, You may print any or all of this if you want. It is a personal note to you. It can also be considered to everyone. In this column, I will include many thoughts, so I will caution you before reading it. I am not trying to offend a~one, but I am going to "tell it like it was" a cliche for which I have been known. The recen! Miss Gay America Pageant was Just a new b3ginning.for most gay people. The pageant had suffered tremendously within the past few years because it has been shrouded in dishonesty, continuous misdealings and misappropriation of funds. This was all the fault of the founder of the pageant. We tried to salvage the reputation of the pageant by changing the figurehead- -for involvement and association purposes. This we did. To my surprise many contestants stayed away- -untrustion of the stayed away -- untrusting of the pageant and the former promoter. Finally we made the contest with 29 of the best contestants that I could have hoped for at this time. The contest ran like clockwork under the direction of myself, Lady Baronessa, Jennifer George, Shawn Luis, Chelsea St. John, and Tuna Starr. The decision was made and the winner crowned. The audience favorite did not win, so an immediate "rigged" element came into play. What the audience failed to realize was that these contestants had been judged on more than just stage presentation. The male and female interviews counted one fourth of their total score. So what one saw as a- perfect performance on stage, did not necessarily win the contest. So as far as "rigged" goes, I will say that this is one of the first pageants that has not been rigged as far as contestants go, and I personally will fight anyone who dares to say it was. The judges chose who they thought would be the best all around winner. They took everything into consideration, and they chose the person that could present both sides of gay life and speak for gay people all over throughout the coming year. We have never had a failure yet. Shawn Covington will be a Miss Gay America that we all can be proud of. All Miss Gay Americas are. Many people - gay people were very rude to the judges during the pageant simply because they failed to see eye to eye with their decisions. To those ignorant people. I say I'm sorry you came you gave us a bad name of which your type usuaily does. As far as attendance, I personally was very disappointed because the majority of Houston gays stayed home. Most of the 3 night crowd were out of towners. They cared about the pageant. This was a chance for Houston people to see a quality pageant. They missed it, and that chance will not come again for a long time. The pageant was given for you to enjoy, and you chose not to attend. Next, I might add a note of sincere thanks to all who helped me my MC's the hosts Ricky, Carl, Joe and Dale, the lighting techs, and the sound man. They all donated their services. Everyone else was paid. As far as donations to the pageant, 1 commend and thank the clubs and bars in Houston and everywhere for their financial support. To Mel, I owe a tremendous thanks for all he did for the pageant. Time, money, advertising, odds and ends. To Phil Frank, my deepest regards for his ever faith ful personal and business assoc iation with me. Now I might add a more personal message. Immediately following the crowning, I was summoned to the room of the pageant founder. As he had signed all rights for the pageant over to me, he immediately began an inquiry about how the winner was chosen. I explained the judging system used and the chairman of the judges agreed with my explanation. He quickly stated that he was disappointed and that he was going to make the pageant null and void. After an exchange of words, I confronted the founder with the massive amount of unrecorded money he had collected from all over the country in supp - ort of the pageant, and questioned him as to what happened to that money. He refused to answer my question. I asked him for a look at his books, he refused. He immediately retaliated with a barrage of insults calling me all types of adjectives and adverbs saying that I was doubting his word. Now I ask you, how could I do less??? The truth of the matter is that he concealed much of the money received from selling illegal pageant franchises throughout the country, and shoved the Miss Gay Americas into providing him stepping stones through their connections for further misdealings. He tried to con others into spending their money for anything he wanted, and he used my personal savings for investments that never materialized. I believed in the man, and I was taken. I gave him money for everything from mousetraps to used coat hangers. He accepted entry fees of this years pagE)ant contestants, and refused to give that money to me but insisted that those contestants enter the pageant to save his face. I made their entry fee up out of my pocket and paid most of the prize money that w~. So as you can readily see, the founder had some slight imperfections as to his personal involvement. He still denies all this in front of everyone with no explanation as to where any of the money went. Before I was thrown out of his room for confronting him with all this, he verbally stripped me of my title Miss Gay America of 72, and told me that if I ever used it again, he would smash my face in. Of course, he would have one heck of a time doing that. My final question was, WHY??? He threw me out. So now, I say to you gay people, I will never give up this pageant. Blvd It appears that the race for Oscars is on once again. What a year of confusion the Academy has to look back upon. Such as in the box office hit "Nashville" all 26 actors are qualifying in the supporting actor or actress category. George Burns in "The Sunshine Boys" has curiously been listed in the supporting actor category. Most film goers will consider him a co star with Walter Matthau rather than supporting him. It can be a shrewd move to drop a sentimental favorite to the supporting race. It appears that in his 40th year, Oscar may be lacking in quality. Most Academy watchers believe that to be true. Now with the year over, all of the Oscar hopefuls have now been presented. The big movie of 1975 was "Jaws". It quickly made all previous box office records obsolete. But even the Universal press agents don't claim it as a work of art. The most notable entries into the race have been "Lucky Lady", "Barry Lyndon", and "The Hindenburg". They have a combined total cost of over $35 million. It's needless to say what the critics reviews have been - more than disappointing. In 197 4 "Earthquake", "Towering In~ ferno", and "Airport 1975" should have been the flops of the year according to the critics. Needless to say that these films were the biggest grossers of the year. Aeademy voters are very often affected by the critics, whereas the opinion of the critics very seldom affect the box office. All in all, the Academy voters are going to have a tough time this year. The potential field for nominees for best picture appear to be as a be as follows: "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" "Jaws" "Shampoo", "Dog Day Afternoo~" "Special Section", "Tommy" and "The Hindenburg", It looks f~irly certain to be the year of the "bird" for Oscar. As far as the individual performances, I'm afraid that the great white shark out performed all others. This was basically from film makers being intent on making films with the emphasis on tricks and stunts. As far as the field of performance, it is very sparce. In the race for best actor Jack Nicholson leads the way with his superb acting in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". But Al Pacino's outstanding performance in "Dog Day Afternoon" may give him a close race. The field is large and there are a number of others being considered: Warren Beatty in "Shampoo" Roger Daltry in "Tommy" Rya~ O'Neal in " Barry Lyndon"' Walter Matthau in "Sunshine Boys", Sean Connery and Michael Caine in "The Man Who Would beKing" R?bert Shaw, Roy Scheider, and Richard Dreyfus in "Jaws", George C._ Scott in " The Hindenburg" and Richard Roundtree in "Man Friday". What about best actress? A good choice would be Marilyn Bassett in "The Other Side of the Mountain". Glenda Jackson is close behind with a stunning performance in "Hedda". And so the list begins: Liza Minnelli in "Lucky Lady", Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, and Lee Grant in "Shampoo", Barbara Streisand in "Funny Lady" and Marisa Berel\son in "Barry Lyndon" As in the past, and with no offense to _the ladies, the major )ack of quahty acting still remains m the best actress categories. It seems that Hollywood just doesn't favor their sex with quality roles. Best direction is pretty much the same as best picture: Milos Foreman, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"; Robert Altman "Nashville"; Stephen Spielberg' "Jaws"; Hal Ashby, "Shampoo'; Stanley Kubrick, "Barry Lyndon" John Huston, "The Man Who Would Be King"; and Ingmar Bergman "The Magic Flute". ' And so it goes for the year past for Oscar. Whether the critics or the box office influence the Academy voters most remains to be seen. One thing is certain that statue or gold means more tha~ just an award; it means possibly millions of dollars in re releases over the next few years, not to mention the bidding wars among the television networks. Once again, the race is on. TRIPLE X NEWS ,,,,,_,,_ 3816 E: BELKNAP.&·~... FT. WORTH 834-9238 ,!.!._- .
