to rush hour on the Gulf
Freeway. This in turn created
excessive noise, honking of horns
and excessive pedestrian traffi~
during all hours of the night.
After failing to convince
Gays to move by handing out
mapped circulars, the MCA then
went so far as to barracade the
streets at night. This they said
was done "with the cooperation of
the Mayors office", but of course
ill.egal action without proper permits
from the City Council and
without police supervision. This
they stated was their last stand
before police harassment would

the infamous "Montrose Circuit"

The idea of the MCA to move
the circuit to a better location was
a very good idea. However the
choice of locations was a bad one
that Gays simply found impossible
to move to. Of course the
stree.ts on the circuit are bad.
Bad is ,not even a very good word
to describe the streets. They
are rutted, patched, and repatched
so much, that a cow trail might
have made easier riding. Yet
despite negative response from
local citizens and bad street conditions,
Gays still refuse to move
from their position of maintaining
the Montrose Circuit as their cruise
route.
On Wednesday, January 26th
the MCA and the city of Housto~
may have made the last move concerning
the location of the circuit.
All cross streets that crossed
over the two main streets
that contained the main bulk of
traffic were served with the official
death warrant of the Mont~
ose Circuit. All streets crossmg
the circuit had signs stating
No Turns 7 p.m. to 6 a .m. placed
on the corners. This has thereby
stol?ped all cars from circling the
cruise a.rea and prevented any
turns bemg made on the circuit
streets. The main test came on
Thursday, January 29th, when it
~as reported that Houston Police
issued 43 traffic citations for illegal
turns and five people were
taken to jail. This has all but
assured that the Montrose Circuit
exists no more.
Next week: An indepth look

CARNIVAL
As is true with any hospitable hostess
New Orleans ishappytoentertain
her good friends. But, what
these good friends must understand
is that Mardi Gras and the whole
Carnival season is actually a great
big rollicking family party given
by the people of New Orleans for
themselves.
It is in every sense a "family
tradition" of long standing. In
fact, it is believed that as soon as
New Orleans was founded by Bienville,
250 years ago, his men had
their first Mardi Gras celebration.
THE RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE
Mardi Gras, which means "Fat
Tuesday", is intrinsically oriented
with the season of Lent. It is the
last day before Lent begins and is
the high point of "Carnival". Derived
from Latin meaning "Farewell
to the Flesh", it's a timt>
for masquerading, parties, balls,
parades and celebrations of all
kinds before the fasting and penitence
begins.
Officially, the Carnival season
begins on the Feast of the Epiphany,
which is January y, the Twelfth
Night after Christmas. This is
the day the Three Kings visited
the Christ Child and recognized
him as the Messiah.
Carnival ends at midnight
~efofe Ash Wednesday, and early
the next monuilg th~ 1in~~ c! peni
tents fa
tents are formed at the churches
for them to receive the cross of
ashes on their foreheads.

Aries March 21 - April 20
Don't make major purchases or investments
this week. The feelings
of loved ones should be accorded
respect. Take a hard look at
something you are about to discard.
Taurus April 21 - May 21
Social gears may not mesh too
smoothly. Be tactful with friends
considerate of their whims and
weaknesses. Unexpected cooperation
can come from an unlikely
source.
Gemini May 22 - June 21
Some new technique or tool can be
valuable at work or play. Look
for new ways of doing routine things
In purchasing, be sure to buy the
most modern model.
Cancer June 22 - July 23
You will find people to be quite
agreeable and personable. Parents
and bosses will have your
best interests at heart. A smile
will gain a successful end.
Leo July 24 - August 23
Youth under your purview need
guidance to encourage genius, neutralize
waywardness. Play your
hunches this week. Avoid a clash
with an outspoken or aggressive
person.
Virgo Aug 24 - Sept 23
Look out for unusual problems involving
work, personnel, etc. You
are a good trouble shooter; your
talents may be in unexpected demand.
Try to prevent health upsets.
Libra Sept 24 - Oct 23
This week indicates a new beginning
in an important area. The
odds for success in romance, creativity,
and entertaining are high.
Keep very active now. The stars
favor the congenial and romantic
side of life. Look for it to happen
from an unexpected source.
Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 22
There may be a sudden opportunity
to travel, or news arrives unexpectedly.
Some pleasant surprise
may be in store. You should
be able to perceive inner workings.
Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21
An unusual concept or turn of events
will enable you to benefit
through the finances or resources
of others. Get together with a
partner to cook up a sharp scheme
Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 20
You may attract a new partner who
can demonstrate a few tricks you
have not known about. However,
shun what might be considered unethical.
A change impends.
Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19
Criticism can be in the air right
now. Knowledge attained may not
apply to current methods. News
which seems negative may have
positive connotations by weeks end.
Pisces Feb 20 - March 20
You should be able to react well to
the initiatives of other people now.
You can always learn new ways of
doing things. Rumors can't be
substantiated this week. Look for
a new personal involvement with
romance.
