Transcript Wffi&TOWi BRIEFLY G.C.S. Rennovation; Larry Palmer (top) and Leonard Cazares. (Jim Olinger^ GCS OFFICE REN0\ Six people volunteered time, money, and materials to renovate the Gay Community Services office in Austin during January, 1980. Larry Palmer, George, Leo Cazares, Michael, Gerry Tarr, and Francisco gave the GCS office the first facelift it has received since GCS opened in 1975. The crew sheetrocked, taped, patched, and painted the walls. They scraped up the asphalt tile, removed the tar adhesive, buffed the wood floor, and varnished the hardwood to a lovely shine. They stripped the paint from the window frames and from the door. They varnished the wood window frames, again producing an attrati at ural look. Bulletin boards and events cal- GCS sponsors a gay youth group which meets at 2:30 p.m. Saturdays in the University Y office. Invite your under-18 friends to join us. Call UTT-6699 or UlU-l66o for more info. We have had one meeting so far, with 3 teenagers present. Leadership of the Friday night GCS rap group is rotating among Dick Ehlert, David Miller, Carr Strong, and Larry Palmer. Attendance during January has averaged 20. Friday night attendance at CCAA bowling Jan. 25 was 12 people. . . .Dawn East is planning a date of Fri. Feb. 8 for a new lesbian rap group at "Lesbian/Gay Community Services." The new homosexual womens group will probably meet in the rap group room adjacent to the University Y office. . . . A Chicano gay group has formed in Austin. Member;? have not yet agreed on the name for their new group. A phone number for contacting the Chicano gays is available at GCS, but only to people who come into the GCS office in person. Carl Cochran told how to hurt the movie "Cruising" when it opens Feb. 15 in the Southwest U.S. In the Jan. 18-2 U 1980 This Week in Texas, Cochran describes our part of the national strategy against "Cruising": 1. When you go to see "Cruising," DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM THE SNACK BAR; that's where theaters make their profits. 2. Don't help Cruising gain publicity from gay pickets or demonstrations. DO NOT DEMONSTRATE OUTSIDE THE THEATER! (Remember The Life of Brian.) 3. Wait until the third week of its exhibition to go see Cruising - (but do go see it.) h. Boycott Friedkin and Weintraub's future films and/or records. The idea is to financially hurt the owner of the theatre that shows Cruising and to hurt box office attendance at as well. Encourage film producers to portray • honestly. ice, - ieorge, Lsco! *X* GCS LISTED IM HOUSTON PHONE DIRECTORY Homosexual women and men from the Houston area have been calling and writing to GCS ever since the Austin gayline appeared in the December '79 Houston telephone directory. Troy Stokes and Ron Sawey had GCS listed in the Houston phone book because Houston still does not have a gay telephone hotline. Houston does have gay political, religious, arid social organizations, including 2 eommunitiy centers, but the fcayou City lacks the nightly peer counseling and referral service that is offered in Austin by GCS. (Houston Gay Political Caucus does make professional referrals, /referrals to professionals/ however.) GCS phone counselors primarily refer Houston callers to listings in TWT for places and groups to contact. Welcome to the world of GCS, Houston! Aust': a half- ay radio program 'on KUT-F:' y, March 2, with a tentative timeslot of 12:30 p.m. Carr needs volunteers to help with this radio project. Call I in the evenings at ltlil-l*231. Austin Lambda has a new, enlarged format for its Feb. '80 newsletter. Michael Fernandes edits the 8- page publication, which has new, reviews, announcements and an events calendar. The Jan. 25-31 '80 TWT. says "Marci Fletcher will open the metallic 218 Club at that address on 6th Street on Feb. 23 with Claude Sacha booked for opening night." . . . Rumor Hazzit hasn't answered their phone when we've called them during January. . . . AUSTIN'S ENTER TAINMENT rj-j^ CENTER Private ©liar 709 east 6th Austin
