Transcript COI1tt€CTION$ ::S PHONE COUNSELORS: left to right: Dick Lert, David Miller, Wayde Frey, Larry Palmer, Dawn East, Leo Cazares. top: Lysistrata. Not shown: Frank, Robin, Brad, Edward, Bo. Olinger) 11 NEW PHONE COUNSELORS VOLUNTEER The number of GCS phone counselors grew from h to 1*1 during January. Nine new counselors, two of them women, volunteered as a result of seeing the "Phone Counselors Needed" article in the Dec.-Jan. CONNECTIONS. Two other volunteers stepped forward after reading the "Austin Phone Counselors Needed" notice in the Jan. 18-2U THIS WEEK IN TEXAS. At present, the GCS peer counselors are Lynn, Edward, Bo, Leo, Robin, Dawn, Brad, Dick, Gary, Frank, Rob, David, Larry, and Michael,, Two of the new peer counselors are Chicano, and one is under age 18. GCS now has 2 phone counselors every night of the week, which ought to make the office a lively place to visit or to call. Gay Nurses' Alliance N In the two months since it began, the syphillis screening project conducted by the Austin-Travis County Health Department and the Gay Nurses Alliance of Austin has received an "amazing" response. "The Health Department has been amazed at the response we've gotten so far," says GNA member Gerry Tarr. The program has stimulated so much public interest that the Health Department will be increasing their clinic hours. Exact figures aren't available yet, but over two hundred blood samples have been taken and there have been several positive test results. "The Gay Nurses Alliance is very happy with the reaction our program is getting from the community," Tarr continued. "We're pleased that Austin people are taking enough interest in their health, and community health too, to help try to stop this epidemic of sexually-transmitted diseases. After all, it only takes one case and a whole group of people get infected. We're trying to make it as convenient as possible to get tested. We want to lick this problem." The GNA and A-TCHD wish to thank these businesses for sponsoring the program: Austin CounVry, Club Austin Baths, Mr. Peepers, the New Apartment Lounge, the Private Cellar, and the Stallion Bookstore. The free screenings will continue weekly at locations to be announced. The Gay Nurses Alliance and Gay Community Services will be conducting the sexually-transmitted disease screening on Wednesday nights at the GCS office.
