Tin- day-long workshop was hosted by Gay People of Austin and Auatin Lesbian Organization. \rl Vddington served as coordinator lor lhc event. The day'.- activities provided a first opportunity for gav persons to meet other.- who are also involved 111 sonic way with the academic world — as administrator)!, teachers, librarians. and student* - or lhe professional world - doctors, lawyers, nurses, etc. Discussion groupi explored social. legal, and employment problems affecting gaj educators, professionals, and students. Several participants related their personal experience.-. both positive and negative, in coining out with straight colleagues and in their institutions. Two papers were also presented. ()ne, entitled "Psychological Investigations in Androgyny in Males ami Females," wo* given b\ Robert llclmreich and Steven Ward oi I I Vustin. This paper, quoting a large -calc research project, notes that l>ersoii> possessing both "feminine" ami "masculine" traits are happier and rale higher in self-esteem than people having only one trait B. Jaye Miller. of the I niversity of Houston al Clear lake City, presented "Homosexuality and Decadence in western Literature," in which he recommended a redefinition of "decadence": he illustrated that SO called period- of decadence can In- "exceptionally ripe, not just in terms of artistic experimentation and creativity, . . . but also in terms of great political, moral, psychological, and religious growth." \fter meeting in separate caucuses, the men and women pooled iheir suggestions lor lhc formation of a Steering committee and submitted their resolutions. Il was decided !>v the conference participants lo form a steering committee of 6 women and 5 men with the goals of increasing membership in GAI . publicizing our existence, mailing a newsletter, and planning the nexl conference lo be held within a year. There was also some interest in lhe publication ol an academic journal of Gay men and Lesbian studies, and the committee plan- to investigate wch an undertaking.
