Transcript December 1973 BROADSIDE Page 3 TASK FORCE REPORTS CREDIT Women who are interested in setting up a credit file should contact the Credit Bureau at 224-4744. Divorced women should be prepared to give proof of divorce. Married women who do not have any credit cards in their own name cannot expect to have a credit file. If you have any problems or questions call Susan Butler at 664-9534. MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE The December 14 rap session will be on Individuality Within Marriage. After January the task force will be putting out a handbook on marriage and a handbook on divorce. Some volunteers are needed who have a legal background. Contact Eileen Martin at 448-5167. WOMEN IN THE ARTS This task force is working on a feminist play. They are also starting a consciousness raising group for women artists. For information on the group, contact Robbie Harris at 469-4001. EDUCATION The Education Task Force, in cooperation with the Continuing Task Force for Educational Opportunity for Women, has completed its textbook protests before the Texas Education Agency. 109 pages of changes were made as a result of protests (the great majority were changes requested by feminists). The state is allowed to adopt five books in each subject area from those submitted by each publisher. We endorsed three series of elementary readers, all of which were adopted. Substantial changes were made in the other two series adopted. Substantial changes were also made in the math books, although those were not evaluated by Houston feminists. The one very offensive illustration in the Latin books (an illustration of the verb "to do" - men do 80 mph; women do packages, dishes, and their hair) was redrawn. Our next task is to get endorsement of feminist oriented textbooks by local textbook committees, a statewide workshop for textbook publishers, and sexism in education workshops by the Local Regional Service Centers. The task force is still participating in a coalition of Houston feminists who are studying sexism in the Houston Independent School District, with the cooperation of Dr. George Garver and personnel of HISD. This study seems to be going quite well. We have subdivided into committees to study such areas as Vocational Education, Attitudes, Counseling Personnel, Administration and General Education. An HISD person is serving as chairperson of each committee and at least one feminist is represented. If you would like to help on any of these projects, call Kay Whyburn at 667-8556. ***** HAVE YOU PAID YOUR 1974 DUES?
