NEW RELEASE - A New View of a Woman's Body - fully illustrated Guide by the Federation of Feminist Women's Health Centers. A Touchstone book published by Simon & Schuster, W, 1981 $8.95 SECOND ASSAULT - RAPE AND PUBLIC ATTITUDESSECOND ASSAULT UH PROF, KAREN HOLMES PUBLISHES FEMINIST ANALYSIS UHOC tesistant Professor of Social Wbrk Karen A. Halmes has co-authored a recently released book on rape The Second Assault - Rape and Public Attitudes. In the book, written with Joyce E. Wlilliams, Associate Professor of Sociology at Texas Women's University, some common attitudes and responses to this most personal assault are examined, psychological, sociological and feminist views of rape are explored and some often ignored or denied arttitudes are exposed. Both experienced rape crisis counselors, Halmes and Williams go beyond the traditional victim-rapist model to consider a new theoretical model of rape as an extension of racial and sexual inequality. The in-depth study, based on more than 1,000 interviews of Anglo-, Afro-, and Mscican-Anericans (rape victims and the general public) in San Antonio, Texas, The Second Assault strives to approach the often overlooked 'other' trauna of rape as it occurs after the initial physical assault. For Holmes and Williams, the rape victim faces prejudiced attitudes and social judgments which further contribute to feelings of rejection and traunatization. Such notions as 'women want to be raped' and 'all rapists are depraved woman-haters' are two examples of convenient assumptions which keep the issue of rape one of complexity and mi sunderstand ing. On campus since 1980, tolmes was the keynote speaker last year in the UHX "Against Our Will" presentation on rape. Current courses taught include topics on Health care Issues, Social Treatment and Crisis Intervention.
