He claims that he receives about 700 "anti-" letters for every 70 "pro-" letters. According to Hutchison, rrail plays a key role in legislative decisionmaking. Conclusion—we must turn the "anti/pro" ratio around! Hutchison's committee plans to ha\re public hearings on HCR 57 (the resolution to rescind Texas' ratification of the proposed 27th amendment to the U.S. constitution) in early April. Texans for ERA coordinators Barbara Vackar and Debra Danburg feel that strong "pro-" support in the galleries could be effective in killing th° rescission move this session. HCWPC will coordinate carpools to Austin as soon as the date is announced for the hearings. The good news* Several HCWPC members traveled to Austin Feb, 26 to witness the public hearings on HB 666 (calling for a non- binding public referendum on the ERA in April). The bill's sponsor, George Preston, of Paris, Texas', entered the room with an ERA YES button on one lapel, and a STOP ERA button on the other lapel. Only one person testified in favor of his bill. Several testified against it. the consensus in Austin last week was that HB 666 is virtually dead, that the "pro-" forces had a good showing on Feb. 26 and that we should concentrate oh improving our strength for the April hearings on the rescission resolution. |
