Transcript | PROGRAM MEETING Nikki Van Hightower will be our guest speaker at the program meeting to be held on Wednesday, November 3» 7:30 PM at the Clayton Library. Nikki's topic is "Sex Discrimination in City Employment: The Role of the Women's Advocate". Join us for an interesting evening. CONSCIOUSNESS RAISING An organizational meeting for the formation of new consciousness raising groups will be held on Monday, November 8, at 8 PM at the Women's Center. The new groups will be conducted by Margaret Buchorn. MALE AWARENESS CENTER The Male Awareness Center seems to be thriving. They will be showing the film, Men's Lives, on Monday, November 1, at 8 PM at the First Unitarian Church, 5210 Fannin. For a copy of their newsletter containing other scheduled events for November, contact Craig Roberts at 524-6517. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE The first meeting of the Houston Area NOW Task Force on Domestic Violence will be November 17 at 7:30 PM at the Women's Center. At present there is no group in Houston concentrating on this problem and as a result there are no alternatives for women caught in the cycle of violence at home. There is a crying need for emergency shelters to provide help for women who, often being without financial or emotional resources, have nowhere to turn. Happily, Fort Worth is now in the process of opening the first Texas shelter. There are 18 in the U.S. so far and these already active projects can teach us a lot from their experiences. I very much hope that many of you have an active interest in providing a Houston alternative. Strongly recommended reading: Do It NOW, Vol. IX, No. 5 - a national issue devoted to domestic violence and battered women. Also, Del Martin's Battered Wives, published by Glide Publications, 330 Ellis Street, San Francisco, DA 94102, for $6.95. Any bookstore can order it. If you cannot attend the meeting, please phone me at 524-7149 and we'll get together. The longer we wait, the longer they wait. Catherine Livingston |
