Transcript The Houston Rape Crisis Coalition will conduct advocate training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday eveningsfrom October 17th through November 9th at St. Philip Presbyterian Church, 4807 San Felipe. We will meet from 7 to 10 p.m., skipping October 31st, in ghostly tradition. The twenty-one hours of training will cover such topics as attitudes about rape, victimology, crisis intervention, services and procedures for vicfV-ns in the local emergency medical and criminal justice systems, and public speaking. This information will qualify you for participation in several areas of anti-rape activity: Victim assistance—through telephone contact to provide emotional support, information, and referral; accompaniment to police stations and court; and a variety of services related to crisis intervention and victim advocacy. Community education — through coordination of special events to call public attention to rape incidence and prevention public speaking and publicity— including media contact; and self defense information. Advocacy for more comprehensive victim services--through contact with city, county, and private agencies and organizations providing victim services or rape information; legislative monitoring; and research into current needs of victims. If the growing problem of rape concerns and angers you, HRCC can effectively channel your energy while stimulating personal development through cooperative effort with other advocates and related organizations. Once trained, you are expected to devote four hours each week to the HRCC activity that most irterests you. Much of your work will be self-directed. We will provide information and direction, but you must supply the motivation and daily initiative. HRCC has no oaid staff and no central office. Contact is by telephone, monthly business and program meetings, and committee meetings. We are all volunteers operating our services on membership fees, speaking donations, and personal energy. You are needed if we are to impact the ever-increasing rape problem. Reported rapes are up 33% this year, twice the national rale, and still only the tip of the iceberg since most victims do NOT report. To join us, call 228-1505 for applications and mark your calendar now so you will not miss any of the training sessions—each is essential. Required reading before the first session includes Rape: Victims of Crisis by Burgess and Holmstrom and Aga inst Our Wi11 by Susan Brownmiller. You will receive other information about training early in October. Meanwhile, call 228-1505 if you have questions. We look forward to working with you. Please join us in the fight against rape.
