Transcript PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIRPERSON - a. chair the Public Relations Committee b. identify and maintain a list open to the membership of University outlets for announcements of our meetings, programs and activities; c. prepare and disseminate information to inform the University community of our meetings, programs and activities; d. keep a current file of area Newspersons, annotated for position on feminism, their job responsibility, and audience; e. prepare and disseminate News Releases in consultation with the chapter President; f. prepare news conferences; g. review chapter materials for racism, homophobia, classism, ageism and other "-isms" that diminish our humanity. PUBLIC AFFAIRS CHAIRPERSON - a. chair the Public Affairs Committee b. monitors legislation and informs chapter of national, state local concerns; c. identifies social activist groups and makes recommendations for action to the chapter. [d. attend (or delegate a representative to) legislative alliances the chapter may belong to (such as Women's Lobby Alliance.)] NEWSLETTER CHAIRPERSON - a. chair the Newsletter Committee b. organize Chapter's contribution to Houston Area NOW publication, Broadside/ Herstory, both chapter news and help for the workers of Broadside/Herstory. [b. take responsibility for recruiting writers and workers;] [c. take responsibility for production of chapter newsletter;] [d. in absence of newsletter chairperson, the president assumes these duties;] [e. take responsibility for preparation of and mailing to members of meeting announcements in the months in which there are no newsletters; [f. final responsibility for editorial decisions on content of the chapter newsletter rests with the President.] 10. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS - a. shall take responsibility for Chapter business, actions, programs, fund raising, receiving and acting on reports from Standing and Ad Hoc Committees. II. "OPEN" AND "WORKING" FILES - a. Open files are those which are open to all members and so designated in these rules, stored in the "NOW Office" for the purpose of making background information and current announcements available to members; b. Working files are the files of Officers [and Board Members] such as President, Treasurer, [Secretary, Fundraiser,] Membership, [University Liason,] Public Relations, Public Affairs and may be optionally maintained at their home or at the NOW Office. [Files maintained in the NOW office are open unless the responsible officer specifically labels them closed.] The [A major] purpose of these files is to be able to pass all information on in an organized way to the next person who holds office. c. Both open and working files shall be considered the property of the Chapter. III. NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS COMMITTEE - 1. The President shall appoint a Nominating Committee consisting of five (5) [at least three (3)] members including the Treasurer and the Membership Chair. 2. This committee shall solicit nominations, by mail, from the entire membership of the chapter. It shall be the duty of the Nominating Committee to secure the consent of the members nominated to run for office. The term "members" means "members in good standing" as defined in section II, D, 4[5], d. The Committee shall contact all memBers nominated by members and shall have no authority to eliminate the name of any member in good standing nominated and willing to serve. The resulting list of candidates shall be mailed to all members of the chapter in the notice announcing the annual meeting and election. Nominations can be made from the floor, if the member is present and willing to serve. 3. This committee shall be responsible for preparing all details of the election, from announcements, to the ballot, to the voting, to the counting and declaration of election results. IV. ELECTIONS - 1. Election of Officers shall be by preferential balloting by members in good standing present at the election meeting, provided that the membership has received not less than 10 days written notice of the election and of the announced candidates. The manner of the balloting and counting shall be approved by the Executive Board [of Directors]. No person can be elected to more than one office. (This last does not prohibit a person from running for more than one office.) 2. Elections of Officers and [Board Members] will be held both in September and in January as follows: a. In September, during the third week after school starts, elect President, Treasurer, Public Relations, University/Groups Liason, Nev/s letter b. These Officers and [Board Members] take Office October 1. c. In January, during the third week after school starts, elect Secretary, Membership, Public Affairs, Community Groups Liason [Fundraiser] Newsletter. d. These Officers and Board members take Office on February 1. e. All Officers will have a term of one year or until their successors takes office. V. VACANCIES - In case of a vacancy, the Executive Committee [Board of Directors] may choose a replacement to complete the term, by vote of the remaining Executive Committee members [Board of DirectorsJ or by calling a special meeting of the membership. VI. MEETINGS - Chapter meetings will be held on the First Tuesday of each month at the University Center, beginning in July, 1981. [5 minimum of eight (8) times per year.] VII. AMENDMENT OF OPERATING RULES - These Operating Rules may be amended by majority vote at any membership meeting of the chapter, provided that written notice of intention to amend shall have been given to members at least 10 days before the meeting. VIII. Procedures - Except as herein provided, all proceedings of this chapter shall be governed by Roberts' Rules of Order, Newly Revised. Prepared August 24, 1982 Amended by vote September 14, 1982
