Transcript | broad-side n. 3b: a sheet of paper printed on one ar both sides and folded, 4: something (as a ballad) printed on a broadside. 5a: the simultaneous discharge of all the guns on one side of a ship. Vol. 6. No. 1 HOUSTON CHAPTER CF N.O.W. January. 1975 MEAN GREEN LIMA BEANS "REAP" A RED HARVEST Led by Allison (MVPj McKinney and Craig (Elephant Feet; Roberts, The Green Lima Beans plowed the Red Harvesters, 21-7, in the first annual Yupon Bowl, In a game characterized by genteel, sportswomanlike play, the Beans ran through, around and over (mostly over) a game but, with the exception of "Big Red" Barbossa, slightly anemic Red team. Sharing backfield duties with Allison and Craig far the Beans were Bunny and Lynn with Sug Casey and "The Alaskan Secret Weapon" Chris operating as flankers. Lovell and Ciganiero pushed and shoved in the front line while Merryl Leatherman did her usual fine job of holding. Red quarterback Eddie Brady played most of the game from a prone position with the rest of the Red backfield, Mollie and Kathy, also spending a remarkable amount of time on the ground. Red center Lee Wilkins and Red Linespeople Shawn Casey and Big Red had the unenviable task of blocking the Green defensive charge so that Red receivers "The Red Fax" and Claudia could help set up two McKinney interceptions. Jan Cunningham tripped a lot. The game was so well played that the officials, David Knowles and Susie, resplendent in their striped shirts and whistles, called only three penalties. This game was remarkable in that Shawn Casey failed to throw an Interception. Meanwhile, on the sidelines, the band, the drill team, cheerleaders, spectators and floats provided a colorful background far the game. Supported by Kay Whyburn's keg of beer (and plainly showing its effects) the band and drill team wove their way through an intricate half time show highlighted by the crowning of the Yupon Bowl Magistrate, "The Queen Jane." The sequlned, beribboned, knowledgable, NOW cheerleaders gave their customary, unmatchable performance, displaying their versatility by cleverly adapting their famous "We want a touchdown" Softball cheer to "We want a homerun" in honor of the game. Game to the Green team, Float Award to the Red team, Best Fans Award to everyone. (Can't wait for basketball, can you?) |
