Transcript Women's Lobby '61 Alliance SUMMARY OF LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MEETING HELD MARCH 16 Present and voting on recommendations: TARAL, HCWPC, Women's Group, YWCA, CLUW, HANOW, BANOW, GPC, HAWC and new member, A UNITING CHURCH. Welcome! Judy Blanchard is Legislative Chair for the church in Clear Lake City. Not represented: Association of Women Attorneys, Houston Network, Women of Intention, WEAL, NWNOW. Please try to have your alternates attend. NEXT MEETING: March 30, Monday at 6:30 PM at YWCA RECOMMENDATIONS: -*-* Lobby Day in Austin on April 7> Tuesday. Senate Jurisprudence Committee, Oscar Mauzy, Chair, has scheduled hearing for that day on ALL bills pertaining to abortion (among them SB248, S3249, SB414, SB554, SB246, SB636, SB749, SB742)| It is important that pro-choice be there in numbers as we were on March 9 when we outnumbered anti-choice people 4-1 at house committee hearings on bill; If scheduling permits, we can lobby on our other issues that day, too. Sign up your members for round trip by chartered bus, $15 payable to Women's Lobby '81 Alliance. Departure time and place to be announced on March 30. Briefing and information packets for lobbyists and legislators will be distributed on bus trip to Austin. Thanks to all of you who could not go on March 9 but who sent letters, POM's, made donations to the bus cost and contacted their legislators. Keep it up and especially send letters to Oscar Mauzy in advance of our trip there. Use the services volunteered to you by those who attended the workshop on February 21st. Their registrations have been returned to you. ** Neighborhood Calls to S>top Human Life Amendment March 29, Sunday at 1PM-6PM. Assemble at 1 PM at Southwest Women's Center, 6565 DeMoss. Targeted areas are in Bill Blythe's district and Milton Fox, both members of House Committee on State Affairs which hears most anti-rchoice bills. We will go in pairs to homes and apartments to carry information flyers and discuss how HLA affects womenfs lives (and families, too). We expect to repeat the excellent response received in Clear Lake City on January 24 when a similar survey was done. - Results will be tabulated promptly and forwarded to legislators and press. Orientation begins at 1PM. Please commit at least two hours for the door-to-door survey. Survey is directed by HANOW members Jan Stevens and Yvonne Broach. Let's support them with recruits whose name should be forwarded to Jan at 445-2220. ** CONTINUE SUPPORT OF ALL ISSUES TARGETED AT MARCH 2nd MEETING. No hearings were scheduled for the week of March 16. This gave us a short breather and chance to catch up. Things may move fast from now on. Each organization shoulc}. try to allocate some action on each of our issues even though most of you are heavily involved with reproductive freedom. Alliance durability depends on reciprocity. Try to allocate a minimum number of letters on each issue per week. Sample letters have been provided to lighten your task. Joan Glantz suggests one personal letter, duplicated nx" times and sent to each member of the particular committee. All committees are listed in blue guides to "When You Go to Austin" available from League of Women Voters, 1947 West Gray. MAIL ON REPRODUCTIVE CHOICE IS RUNNING 4 to 1 AGAINST US! Get out your pens. SURVEY OF MEMBER PARTICIPATION ON EACH ISSUE The attached form replaces the poorer one distributed at March 16 meeting. Purpose is to find out how narrow or how wide is our total alliance support on each issue. Count each of your members as one.
