Transcript Lesbian Rights A Feminist Issue Feminists recognize that fundamental to the struggle for equality for all women is the right of each woman to control her own body. This includes the right to define and express one's own sexuality and lifestyle. Lesbians face double discrimination—discrimination based on their sex, as well as discrimination based solely on their sexual preference or orientation. It they are also members of ethnic or racial minority groups, discrimination triples. Twenty million Americans . ■ can lose their jobs regardless of job performance if their private sexual orientation becomes known ■ can lose custody of their children in the courts regardless of their parenting ability ■ can be discharged from the military regardless of the quality of their military performance ■ can be fined or imprisoned in 26 states because of archaic state laws governing private consensual sexual activity among adults ... all without legal recourse People generally realize that racism and sexism affect not only racial minorities and women, but all people living in such a society. Similarly, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation both denies basic human rights to a sizable minority of the population and robs society of the talents and resources of productive and useful members. At different times in history, some (and too often many) have found it easier to ignore the women's movement and/or the civil rights movement than to work for them. ALL the great struggles in history have taken extraordinary efforts by people dedicated to eliminating prejudice, ignorance and fear. The issue of lesbian and gay rights is one of those struggles. . . both anti-feminism and homophobia result from institution- alizedy ideological sexism. . . sexist practices and beliefs create an environment which opposes and punishes any true freedom of choice for women and upholds only the most narrow and rigjd adherence to traditional gender-based roles.
