Transcript local bylaws change It is the consensus of the Board of Directors of Houston Area NOW that local dues need to be increased. In order to do so we must change Section II, a. of our present bylaws which reads: "Dues shall be national dues, plus chapter dues of $5.00 per year." Everyone agrees that the local dues should be increased to $10 per year but two different points of view have evolved on whether or not we should make a $1 mandatory allocation to the state NOW organization a part of our local bylaws. Please read the following proposals and be prepared to vote on this issue at the July 9 business meeting. Jan Dilbeck Recommendation "A" "Dues shall be national dues, plus chapter dues of $10.00 per year, $1.00 of which will be for membership in state NOW." Under the new state bylaws presently being considered by Texas NOW chapters, the position of Fundraiser was eliminated. Therefore, membership dues will be the only source of funds for state NOW. State NOW has undertaken several projects which benefit Houston NOW members and which can only be done on a state level, such as the successful blocking of efforts to rescind the ERA in Texas and the appointment of Selma Wells to the Board of Pardons and Paroles. Other statewide activities include an evaluation of the new state constitution, textbook review, and a task force on rape. If state dues are made optional, I feel many of our members will not join state NOW, thereby depriving our state task forces of adequate funding. In addition, if each member is made responsible for submitting his/her individual check for $1.00 to the State Treasurer, it will be an added bother and expense. It would be much simpler for each chapter treasurer to submit one check and a list of members. Kay Whyburn 10
