Transcript DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (info from The River, Texas Council on Family Violence. Oct/Nov 1984 The U.S. Attorney General's Task Force on Family Violence Report is a fairly good assessment of what is happening to families experiencing violence and what our society needs to do to begin to address this issue. There are specific recommendations for each of the components of criminal justice system: law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, Ideas for victim assistance, education and training, prevention and av/areness are also included. The Task Force did take a strong stand regarding the need for the entire criminal justice system to treat family violence as a criminal offense. It recommends that police "presume that arrest, consistent with state law, is the appropriate response in situations involving serious injury to the victim, use or threatened use of a weapon, violation of a protective order, or other imminent danger to the victim. " Although the section regarding the role of shelters for battered women is not very complete, the report does contain a few good recommendations. One such recommendation is that shelters keep tape recordings in languages that residents understand. These tapes would explain shelter services and provide information regarding referrals to criminal justice system and other social services agencies. Another recommendation is to amend the Crime Victims Compensation Act to allow for direct payments to local victim assistance programs. The report also contains recommendations for how private businesses and the general public can support their local shelters. This report will be a useful tool in ongoing public education and criminal justice advocacy. For a copy, write: Attorney General's Task Force 633 Indiana Avenue, N.W.
