Transcript During this same time frame, their was the hearings on the referendum in the city of Houston. The anger from the so-called Christians opposing this act of guaranteeing the freedom from discrimination based on sexual preferance for jobs with the city, was appalling. It made you ashamed of being a Christian, an American, and a native Houstonian. This fight will go on and the battle will come to an end in January. Through all this, yes, we were still registering voters and working in campaigns. Our programs were not neglected during all this. Programs on Pay Equity, Domestic Violence, Shelter Violence, Women and Religion, Pornograhy, Rape and Sexual Harassment were all a part of our continuing education. The best attended meetings were the ones «Mere we had food. Well you can't fight a war on an empty stomach, can you? The October meeting to meet the candidates was a tremendous success. Somehow having candidates relax and enjoy themselves with a glass of wine made them much more believable. The candidates too, must get tired of having to always be on for the populace. At our meeting they were allowed to just be themselves. And, they seemed to enjoy it! The elections were, to me, the worst part of the year. We had all worked so hard and so long to insure that equality would last. It seemed that all the world had gone crazy that fateful Tuesday night. There were so many of you at Marilyn's office who all felt the same way. We were angry, hurt and confused. Where do we go? We go onward and upward. I look back at the year. I am Happy. I am Sad. I will not let the bastards get me down. If there is anything that I wish to impart it is this...Please, give Bay Area NOW your help. This request is not for those of you who have done so much. This is for those of you who are still saying "someone will do it". Someone else died, remember. You must help your new officers carry on the goals of the organization. !Ehese next four years will be difficult and tiring, your help and energy will be needed. Bay Area NOW is one of the finest chapters in the state and/or nation. That is because we have people, women and men, who care. Keep it that way. It is the finest gift you can give your children. To those of you whom I love, respect and admire, THANK YOUJ You have given me hell, love, strength, energy and a feeling of pride. A pride in my family, my sisters and brothers in NOW. For each and everyone of you I LOVE YOU. Phyllis
