Transcript PICKET OF UNRATIFIED STATES SEPTEMBER 22 At the Texas NOW Conference in February, a resolution passed that Texas would do an informational demonstration at our borders with three unratified states. Jan Stevens (Houston NOW) assumed statewide responsibility and Jeanne Saletan (BANOW) coordinated with her on the local effort. Saturday, September 22, was a beautiful day on the Texas-Louisiana border near Orange, Texas (1-10), and Texas NOW members and friends made the most of it as we picketed and displayed signs for ERA. Wc wore green shirts with white legends on them as shown on the following page. The signs were green on white and showed up well. Known participants were: Jeanne Saletan (Coordinator) accompanied by David, Willie & Louie Sandy Anderson Mary McFadin & her sister Daphne Betty Hamnion Bobby Faulkner, husband lames 4 2 gr-chlldr. Several Individuals came all on their own, having heard in advance via Jeanne's press releases. Spaced out along the highway in "Burma Shave" format were signs declaring: (leaving Texas) (entering Texas) EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT ENTERING LOUISIANA WE SADLY REGRET' WOMEN THERE DO NOT HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS YET DON'T SPEND IN LOUISIANA UNTIL E.R.A. IS RATI FT ED THERE plus an assortment of others. WELCOME TO TEXAS ISN'T IT GREAT THAT NOW YOU ARE IN AN EQUAL RIGHTS STATE SPEND IN TEXAS RATIFIED E.R.A. IN 1972 TEXAS NOW The signs were made by stitching cloth letters about 10-12" high onto folded bedsheets in such a fashion that they could be taken apart and put back into service. Some folks made signs but were not at the border. I Lest include Setsuko Kaneko, Linda Uljon, Judy Royster, Judy Blanchard, Wendy Rudnicki, Jeannlne Ramon. 10-79
