As a result we have frequently spread ourselves too thin. This year we are hoping to increase our impact by concentrating on the campaigns of our candidates. I see our major contributions as increasing the number of HCWPC members becoming campaign workers, campaign managers, and candidates—beyond informing voters of the candidates strongest on our issues. We will continue to work in coalitions on various issues. In order to make the greatest impact, I feel that we must concentrate on three areas: coverage by the media, raising our membership, and funding our candidates and operating budgets. These three elements are closely tied together and each is dependent on the other. Each one of us should choose an area as our own focus and work with the committee organized to operate in that sphere. We have developed a great deal of potential in our brief history which needs to be nurtured so that we can use our political clout to its maximum advantage. Here are things we can all do: 1. Support our supportive media: BREAKTHROUGH, KPFT, and KTRH have all given us good coverage in March and April. 2. Bring a potential member with you to meetings. 3. Come to 4th Wednesday meeting prepared to work in committees and to participate in a brief program. 4. Plan to work on our fund-raising events. We plan three galas and a number of social occasions. 5. Don't wait to be called—VOLUNTEER! I am looking forward to a very productive year. We've gotten off to a good start: besides being a Carter delegate, Olga Soliz has been named LULAC's Woman of the Year. I hope each of you will offer suggestions for getting things done and put your energy into making things happen. |
