Transcript October 1973 BROADSIDE Page 3 BILLIE JEAN (continued) The promoters touted the match as "The Battle of the Sexes", "Lib vs. Lob", etc. So what did King's win prove? If we look at the match in the promoters' terms, the Battle of the Sexes is over and women won it. However, if we look at it realistically, the match was a contest between two athletes and King proved to be a better athlete than Riggs. It was a great personal triumph for King as well as a boon for tennis in general and for women's tennis in particular. There is a lesson here for all of us, and it is this: No matter how loudly men of Riggs' ilk shout about the "superiority of the male sex", performance is all that counts. So the next time some dummy tries to lay that nonsense on you, remind him of Bobby Riggs - the guy whose mouth wrote a check his ass couldn't cash. Jan Dilbeck 1974 NATIONAL CONFERENCE The National Board of NOW met in Houston at the Shamrock Hilton September 15-16 to plan the 1974 National Conference. The conference will be held here in Houston at the Astrohall May 31 through June 2. Attendance is expected to be 3,500. The theme for the conference will be "You Can't Stop NOW". In addition to the usual plenary sessions, workshops and exhibits, next year's conference will feature an ongoing "Hyde Park" forum consisting of lectures, panel discussions, films, etc. for the benefit of emerging feminists. Local coordinators for the conference are Marlyne Kilbey (664-4121) and Poppy Northcutt (333-4610). They report there are 37 responsible positions open for people who would like to work on the conference (at the usual salary). Certain activities such as exhibits, child care, documentary filming, security, etc. will be handled on a contract basis. Call Marlyne or Poppy for additional information.
