She spent many years volunteering with the Houston Women's Softball League and with the Houston Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus. Her parliamentarian skills were highly respected. As one of the early board members of the Montrose Activity Center, Cathy was instrumental in the establishment of the Gay & Lesbian Pride Parade. In 1985, as President of the Gay Pride Week Committee, she worked with the group which created and distributed the infamous "Louie Don't Shoot" tee shirts. A few weeks after marching in the Houston contingent of the March on Washington, Cathy was diagnosed with lung cancer. (A longtime smoker, she quit several years ago.) She passed away peacefully in her sleep with her spouse, Carolyn Collins, at her bedside. SHOOT THE QUEERS Despite her vocal support of the 1985 lesbian/gay city employment referendum, Mayor Kathy Whitmire was expected to defeat former mayor Louie Welch in the 1985 contest. Other City Council members had drawn stronger opposition because of their votes in favor of the gay/lesbian job protection ordinance. The year following the Jan. 19, 1985 landslide defeat of the ordinance was one of the saddest in Houston lesbian/gay political circles. Referendum foes turned back the ordinance by a 4-1 margin. Not one city elected official sought the endorsement of the Gay Political Caucus (now Gay & Lesbian Political Caucus). The so-called Straight Slate fielded several candidates for City Council. It was a homophobic homecoming. But as in good Greek tragedy, hubris would soon topple the main character. Unaware that a microphone was already on, Welch joked when a reporter asked him what he would do about AIDS: "Shoot the queers!" Welch snapped in the loudest political farewell reported round the world. Not surprisingly, the former mayor still expected to carry many conservative votes. Within a week of the remark^ T-shirts popped up all over Montrose: Louie, Don't Shoot! One of the daily newspapers unmasked the creators, and, there she was, that amusing, politically correct supervolunteer, Cathy Lenahan Rev. John Gill-Pastor Rev.
