Transcript point of view This has not been my best week. The first thing that happened was the Edith Episode. Edith is a black cat that belongs to a friend of mine. Edith took sick the early part of the week and was duly watched over by my friend for a couple of days. When she showed no signs of improvement, my friend took her to the vet. The vet said she was pretty sick but it was nothing serious and that he would keep her under observation for a couple of days. Reports on Edith's progress were issued twice daily. A couple of days later, my friend called and said the vet had reported Edith had taken a turn for the worse. "Oh no," I blurted out. "I dreamed last night she bought the farm and was stiff as a board." It was the wrong thing to say. I knew it as soon as it was out of my mouth. No amount of apologizing would set it right. An hour later my friend called and said, "Edith bought the farm." Sure enough, she had expired. "Couldn't you have just said you dreamed she had gone to Kitty Heaven?" said my friend. Edith, if you're reading this up there in Kitty Heaven, I apologize. The next day my gynecologist confirmed that I have indeed reached that great feminine plateau, menopause. He also told me that the best medication to alleviate most of my symptoms would probably turn my fibroids into footballs, thereby necessitating a quick hysterectomy. I decided to risk it. I suppose it could have been worse. I could have been advised to get my hair done twice a week and take up ballroom dancing. broad-side 1: a sheet of paper printed on one or both sides and folded 2: any strong or comprehensive attack, as by criticism 3: the simultaneous discharge of all the guns on one side of a ship Copyright Houston Area NOW 1976
