Transcript DON'T FORCET OUR FUND RAISER SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 1985 Thought-provoking film about rape By AllCUER WINSTEN BEGINNING this weekend and for the next four weekends at the Public Theater, there la a free 2 p.m. showing o! Rupc/On- *i». a faaclnatlng. award-winning docu- drama. The Rape Crisis Center In Austin. Texaa. has permitted the Criminal Justice Center of Sam Houston State University to f>roduce the picture. It ooka so real you can't tell the performers, from the real thing. For Instance, police and officials axe real. So Is Jennifer Johanoa, a music teacher, here known as Joan, who breaks down while telling how she came to New York City, was raped, and Immediately went bacV home. never even telling her family about It. • The other woman, Becky, acted by Carla Phillips, Is so Impressive as the victim of the rape this picture investigates and prepares to prosecuto that it's hard to believe it's an act. You can credit director Gary T. McDonald with keeping the per- formancus within reasonably understated bounds. The picture swings between Its suspense- drama of investigation of the crime and a lecture being given future members of the Crisis Center, warning them not to join just because they're angry. The men and wo{t>en< at the lecture are taught how to help vlc- Uma and to understand the cultural condiUoaa that cre&la rapists. This is a picture that may not do away with rape completely, but it surely stimulates a lot ol thought -8-
