Transcript state council Esther Pena from Texas A&I in Kingsville visited our meeting to report on her experience with the A&I Physical Education Department. She has been a champion volleyball player for five years and was the captain of the A&I women's volleyball team until she presented five complaints to the department about discriminatory treatment of the women's team. A week later she was removed from the team, the excuse being that she did not wear a bra while playing. Boos, hisses and groans arose from the council members, who unanimously passed Jan Dilbeck's resolution supporting Esther Pena's fight against sexism in athletics. Martha Dickey will send letters of protest on behalf of Texas NOW to all concerned parties at Texas A&I, as well as to the media, and she will disseminate information about the case to all Texas NOW chapters. Jan Cunningham reported on problems women are having with sex discrimination in sports. The council voted to join ACLU and WEAL in investigating the possibility of a suit against school systems in Texas for sex discrimination in all aspects of education. Jan needs contact people in all Texas NOW chapters to check local school systems. Write or call her at 3602 Milam, Houston 77002 (524-5743). The council elected Helen Cassidy as the Texas delegate to the National NOW Constitutional Convention. Debbie Wernet of Dallas was elected as alternate. The statewide textbook study group was commended for their fine work. The council voted to set up standing committees on rural organizing, third world women, and lesbian rights. The next council meeting will be held January 17 in San Antonio. The NOW Southern Regional Convention will be held in Atlanta April 16-17. The 1976 Texas State NOW Convention will be held May 29-30 and the site will be selected at the next council meeting. 13
