ALABAMA-SUITE 101 I — Many of you may have noticed that my voice is no longer heard on LESBIAN & GAY VOICES, on KPFT and that there is no acknowledgement of Donna Gamier as the program's producer. That is because both Donna and I have resigned as volunteers at KPFT. I hated to leave without saying good-bye, and thanking you for the overwhelming support we've received from you over the years, but circumstances prevented me from making an on-air statement. I feel an explanation is in order and I hope this letter serves that function adequately. A situation happened recently that prohibits our continued involvement with KPFT. A paid staff member acted inappropriately and in a hostile manner towards Donna. This totally uncalled for incident, which I witnessed, was sanctioned by the Station's General Manager when a formal complaint was made. Under these circumstances, to continue to contribute our talents and energy to the organization would compromise our personal integrity. March of 1995 marks the 25th anniversary of KPFT and the beginning of the third year of LESBIAN & GAY VOICES. I had been looking forward to celebrating these events since I have been involved with the station in various forms for almost all of the years it has been on the air. My main involvement has been programming focusing on the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgendered Please send submissions to POB 980601, Houston, TX 77098 or drop items in the WAND envelope hanging on the wall in the community announcement area at Inklings Bookshop behind the door. We also need someone who can pick up the WAND at the printers (6 bundles and a flat box). The printer is in the Heights and closes around 4pm Please call 664-9215 if you can help. communities. Starting in about 1987 I joined Jack Valinski as co-host of Wilde 'n' Stein. My partner, Donna Gamier joined us in 1992 serving as the program's engineer. I left the show in August of that year, as many of you know, to work as the National Organizer for "The 1993 March on Washington". In November of 1992, station management made program changes and Wilde 'n' Stein was taken off the ■air. The community rallied to the- support of the show. As a result, a proposal for a new program, LESBIAN & GAY VOICES, was accepted. Donna and Jack were both part of that effort, with Donna taking on the duties of Producer. When I returned to Houston in June of 1993, I joined the program. Since that time, Donna, with a bit of assistance from me, worked on recruiting & training other volunteers, developing the show to produce a quality product, and promotiing the program within the community. The response from listeners has been very rewarding and both of us are proud of the work we've done. We work very hard for long hours at no pay, and in return expect to be treated in a way that is respectful and accountable. When that does not happen, we take our volunteer skills and commitment elsewhere. We still will work for the cause, but in a more supportive environment. We have appreciated so much your support for LESBIAN & GAY VOICES. Thank you. Sincerely,
