Transcript VP-MEMBERSHIP PLEDGES COMMITMENT, ENTHUSIAM BY JO ANN EVANSGARDNER "THE STATE VICE PRESIDENT - MEMBERSHIP, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF AREA MEMBERSHIP COORDINATORS, SHALL WORK TO PROMOTE CHAPTER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN TEXAS, AND SHALL ASSIST IN THE CONVENING OF NEW CHAPTERS." (TEXAS NOW BYLAWS, AS AMENDED 9/84, VII, B, 3.) THE FOLLOWING IS A SELF-CONDUCTED INTERVIEW WITH THE NEW VICE-PRESIDENT - MEMBERSHIP FOR TEXAS NOW. Q: WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO PROMOTE CHAPTER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN TEXAS? A: 1)FOR STARTERS, AS WILMA SCOTT HEIDE USED TO SAY, A COMMITTED VP-MEMBERSHIP - THIS I CAN PROMISE. I INTEND TO BE WELL INFORMED ON NOW'S MEMBERSHIP PROCESSES, AND AVAILABLE TO CHAPTER OFFICERS NEEDING INFORMATION OR HELP ON MEMBERSHIP MATTERS, AS WELL AS TO PERSONS THINKING ABOUT CONVENING A NEW NOW CHAPTER. MY PHONE NUMBER IS (713)741-4009. 2)FIVE AREA MEMBERSHIP COORDINATORS - TWO MORE ARE NEEDED (FOR AREA IV, WHICH INCLUDES AUSTIN, CORPUS CHRISTI, LAREDO, SAN ANTONIO; AND FOR AREA V, WHICH INDLUDES AMARILLO, LUB- BUCK, EL PASO.) AREA MEMBERSHIP COORDINATORS DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE IN THEIR AREA TO DO THE JOB AND BE ON TEXAS NOW'S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, ALTHOUGH IT CLEARLY FACILITATES THEIR WORK. THE BYLAWS PROVIDE FOR APPOINTMENT BY THE STATE COUNCIL. MEMBERS WHO WANT TO BE "OUR- STORY-MAKERS" (I.E. AREA IV OR AREA V MEMBERSHIP COORDINATORS) SHOULD CALL ME FOR ENCOURAGEMENT TO VOLUNTEER. 3)ABOUT 37 CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP CHAIRPERSONS OR PERSONS WILLING TO COMMIT TO THIS JOB! (WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAVE THE TITLE!) ONE FOR EACH CHAPTER IN TEXAS- 37 "OURSTORY-MAKERS!" I WILL BE SENDING A LETTER TO EACH CHAPTER PRESIDENT WITH ENCLOSED SASPC TO IDENTIFY EXISTING CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP PERSONS. Q: WHY IS PROMOTING CHAPTER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND REWARDING JOBS IN TEXAS NOW? A: BECAUSE A STRONG NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN WILL CHANGE "HISTORY" TO "OUR- STORY," NOT IN THE VAGUE OR DISTANT FUTURE, BUT NOW. AND STRONG NOW CHAPTERS ARE A BASIC NECESSITY FOR AN EFFECTIVE, FEMINIST, DEMOCRAT- PATRICIA TODSEN KUHLMANN PAT KUHLMANN, LONG-TIME NOW ACTIVIST AND BAY AREA NOW MEMBER, DIED THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5th, 1985, AFTER A LONG ILLNESS. PAT SERVED AS AN OFFICER ON BOTH THE STATE AND CHAPTER LEVELS AND WAS THE FORMER PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE CHAIR FOR TEXAS NOW. A MEMORIAL FUND IS BEING ESTABLISHED IN HER NAME. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT PHYLLIS TUCKER AT (713) 944-0033. GOODBYE, PAT. YOU WILL BE MISSED. IC, STRONG, NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR EQUALITY ITY FOR WOMEN. Q: WHAT ARE YOUR IMMEDIATE PLANS TO PROMOTE CHAPTER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT? A: 1) TO HOLD A MEMBERSHIP PROCESSING TRAINING SESSION AT THE NEXT STATE COUNCIL MEETING. 2) TO COLLECT FROM CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP PERSONS OLD AND NEW IDEAS FOR REVVING UP CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT. KATHY WEBB, NATIONAL NOW SECRETARY, HAS PREPARED A PACKET OF IDEAS CULLED FROM CHAPTER NEWSLETTERS OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS. I THINK WE CAN TAKE THESE IDEAS AND TAILOR ONE OR MORE TO FIT SET CHAPTERS 3) TO SEEK HELEN WILMA ORTIZ'S ADVICE AND HELP SO THAT I CAN CONTINUE ON THE PATH SHE HAS SO CAPABLY LAID OUT. TEXAS NOW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT DET. SGT. EDIE CONNELLY, MONTGOMERY COUNTY NOW, WON THIRD PLACE RECENTL Y IN HER FIRST JUDO COMPETITION, THE AQUA-FEST, IN AUSTIN. EDIE COMPETED IN THE WOMEN 'S LIGHT WEIGHT DIVISION. SHE AND HER HUSBAND, ANDY CONNELLY, ALSO A NOW MEMBER, OPERATE THE KIAIJUDO CLUB NEAR THE WOODLANDS AND OFFER SELF-DEFENSE COURSES TO WOMEN. EDIE HAS BEEN ACTIVE IN THE SEXUAL ASSAULT MOVEMENT, NOT ONLY THROUGH HER JOB WITH THE MONTOGMER Y CO UNTY SHERIFF'S DEPA R TMENT A ND HER BUSINESS, BUT ALSO IN HER VOLUNTEER WORK SHE IS THE PRESIDENT OF TICSA, THE TEXAS INTERAGENCY COUNCIL ON SEXUAL ASSA ULT, AND IS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE MONTGOMER Y COUNTY RAPE CRISIS COALITION. SALUTATIONS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO EDIE! (EDITOR'S NOTE: I HOPE TO CONTINUE THIS COLUMN ON A REGULAR BASIS, BUT I'LL NEED YOUR HELP. IF YOU HAVE AN INTERESTING STORY, ANECDOTE OR ACT OF HEROISM TO REPORT ABOUT ANY TEXAS NOW MEMBER, PLEASE CONTACT ME. THANK YOU!)
