True, Womynspace has a chemical-free policy and has not allowed men at most of its activities. Does this mean that a womyn who frequents Womynspace activities has never, presently does not, and never will partake of alcoholic, nicotonic or other mind-altering substances? Or that she does not, has not, and will not ever have any kind of relationship with any man, whether platonic, sexual, or familial? Is a womon required to take such an oath at the door of every Womynspace event? I'm not sure that the womyn I have known at Womynspace could pass even one of these tests and I suspect that is the reason that the Steering Committee, in its great womonly wisdom, has never decided to require such an oath. Nor have I ever suspected Womynspace members of being excessively sexually repressed, depressed or oppressed, judging by the conversations in which I have participated or the even more interesting ones that I have overheard in the gossipy halls of Womynspace. &i*U %%*dUcf, TttS. 2d., JLP& Licensed Professional Counselor By Appointment 713-863-9544 Individual Psychotherapy Partners Counseling Group Psychotherapy FINANCIAL REPORTS JANUARY 1990 OPERATING ACCOUNT Sources of Funds New Memberships $ 60.00 Renewing Members 40.00 WAND Subscriptions 45.00 Display Ads 167.50 Classified Ads 71.00 Donations 25.00 Seriously, I believe that these policies at Womynspace are meant to simply provide an alternative to womyn, not to dictate lifestyle. There have always been places to drink and smoke and Associates with male loved- ones, but where could womyn go when they wanted something different? Womynspace provides that alternative for me. I may not always agree with the implementation of these policies at all events, but I agree with the basic idea because it comports with the feminist and life-affirming ideals I believe in and to which Womynspace subscribes. Womynspace dances and other events have been known to be followed by visits to local clubs serving up bonafide alcoholic beverages and smoke til all hours of the night, so come party with the womyn of Womynspace!
