Transcript 354 PICTURESQUE PALESTINE. girl at the time of his death. His age must have been more than three times that of his wife ; and the whole affair, did we not know it to be veritable history, might be taken for a romance. This name Salome we judge to have been a favourite one in that period, for we find it borne by a sister, a daughter, and a granddaughter of Herod the Great, and likewise by a sister of Mary the mother of Jesus. This place, which, as we have seen, had such a variety of names and rulers, has been the scene of many interesting historical events, to some of which reference may appropriately be made. THE CASTLE OE SUBEIBEH. Known also as the Castle of Banias.
