The date of the building of the Castle is rather uncertain. What is certain is, that under Louis VII, it already existed, for several charters were granted there. Dissimilar in its particulars, on account of the buildings added, destroyed, altered by each Sovereign, the Castle, however, in its whole, is in the style of the Renascence. The inside, remarkable for the ornementation of the apartments, is a witness of Italian influence over France in the sixteenth century, influence so great in the Castle that it deserved the name of "Fontainebleau School". The actual furniture of the Castle, apart some pieces, is not really its own, but has been brought at different times. The most characteristic rooms, either artistically or in their furniture, as the visit goes, are : the Chapel, the Council room, the Presence- Chamber, iMarie-Antoinet-e's bed-room, her Boudoir, the King's staircase, Mme de Maintenon's suite of apartments, Henri IFs Gallery, Francois Ier's Gallery, Diana's Gallery. The Castle was inhabited, enlarged, repaired or altered by Francois Ier, Henry II, Charles IX, Henri IV, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Napoleon Ier, Louis XVIII, Louis-Philippe, Napoleon III. The principal historical events which happened at Fontainebleau are : Louis XIIFs birth (1601); the murder of Monaldeschi (ordered by Queen Marie-Cristine of Sweden) (1657); the revocation of the Edit de Nantes (1685); Conde's death (1686); the stay of Peter the Great (1717); the wedding of Louis XV to Marie Leczinska (1721): the death of the Grand Dauphin, the only son of Louis XV (1765); the Christening of Louis Charles Napoleon, the future Napoleon III in 1810; Napoleon Ier's abdication (1815); the wedding of the Duke of Orleans to Helen of Mecklembourg (1837); the reception of the Ambassadors of Siam (1861). A legend pretends that the carps of the pond are contemporary to Francois Ier. Now, the pond, devasted by the allied armies in 1814, was new-stocked under Louis XVIII. The oldest carps could not then date beyond that epoch. It is impossible to go to Fontainebleau without paying a visit to its Forest. Its copses, its old trees, its rocky solitudes, its wild and waste passes, its green hillocks have contributed, for a great part, though in a different way, in the famous and well-deserved reputation of Fontainebleau. -y c ~K
