Transcript | VENICE. 95 with the chief officers of the ship, one of whom, Mr. Briscoe, is the wearer of the Victoria Cross, given for the most daring rescue of a number of lives near Calcutta. The Pera, which lies just opposite our bedroom window, remains here for some weeks. Both these noble vessels are splendid examples of the wealth and energy of a private company. The completeness of the arrangements for the pleasure and comfort of their passengers is perfect, and though there is no useless display of ornament or gilding, but exquisite taste shown in the colour and decoration of the cabin, the ladies' sitting-room, and the grand dining saloon, all that ingenuity can devise to lessen the monotony of a long sea voyage is here, and the order of the whole seems perfect. Last night we again crossed over to the Lido to witness a grand display of fireworks in the gardens of the Favorita, including a very graphic representation of the Battle of Solferino.
