Transcript | 12 ROME. ton Wood, at the Villa Campana ; this villa has been recently purchased by Mr. Wood, and belonged to the Marchese Campana di Cavelli, in whose family it had been for a century, and who was compelled to quit Rome for political reasons. Situate near San Giovanni, in Laterano, it was frequently visited by some of the greatest nobles of Rome, and both historically and arclneo- logically is of great interest, being enriched with monuments and precious fragments of antiquity, many of which were discovered in the grounds surrounding this summer residence. Gregory the Great retired here to pray in an ancient chapel, decorated with frescoes ; one, of the Saviour, is in the style, if not by the hand, of Giotto. A letter written by the Marchese has been lent for our perusal, which gives a most interesting account of the former splendour of this villa at a time when Ludwig, King of Bavaria, visited its possessor; and this villa is now the property of a young sculptor who came unknown to Rome a few years ago.
