Transcript Republic of Texas County of San Augustine Know all men by these presents that I J. Pinckney Henderson of said county have this day for and in consideration of the sum of eight hundred and twenty dollars bargained and sold to G. H. Bayne as Administrator of David Kirby deceased a certain negroe [sic] woman & her child which said woman is named Carline and the said Henderson does hereby warrant the said slaves to be sound in body & mind and slaves for life. The above bill of sale is to be void on condition that the said Henderson does pay promptly at maturity a certain note executed by himself and security to G. H. Bayne, Administrator, as aforesaid for the said negroe [sic] slaves and of which note the following is a copy "to " Eight months after date we or either of us promise to pay to G. H. Bayne admr of David Kirby eight hundred and twenty dollars for value received this 4th of Nov. 1840. Signed I J. Pinckney Henderson John G. Berry [separate sheet]: And should the said Henderson fail to make prompt payment of the above note then the above bill of sale is to be and remain as a mortgage on said slaves to secure the payment of the same. And in that event the said Bayne shall [verso of 1st sheet]: be at liberty to take into his possession said slaves and keep the same until they can be sold by an order of the proper court.
