While at UCLA, Tellez helped coach teams that won four conference titles and three NCAA championships in seven seasons. Among the legion of great athletes under his direct tutelage at UCLA were: Mike Tully, 17-10 pole vaulter; Francois Tracenelli, 17-9 3/4 pole vaulter who was eighth in the Olympic Games: James McAlister, 27-foot long jumper; Jerrv Herndon and Finn Bendixen, both NCAA Champions in the long jump; Dwight Stones, world record holder in the high jump and third in the Olympics; James Butts and Denny Rogers, both NCAA champions in the triple jump. In addition to his UCLA track coaching duties, Tellez was also in charge of the UCLA football teams in and off season conditioning programs and training programs for the Rose Bowl game. Tellez, a native Californian, graduated from Montebello High School, Whitter College and got his master's from Chapman College. He served in the U. S. Army from 1956 to 1958. Tellez was the head coach and assistant football coach at Buena Park (Calif.) High School from 1958 to 1961. From there he went to Fullerton Junior College as head track and cross country coach from 1961 to 1968, when he joined the UCLA staff. He has also been an instructor at National AAU and Olympic Committee clinics, head coach of the USA AAU track and field team that toured Europe in the summer of 1974 and director of the U.S. Olympic discus, pole vault and shot put camps. Tellez was the coach of the U.S. AAU team that toured Italy, West Germany and Russia last summer. He was also named NCAA indoor Coach of the Year in district six in 1977- Tellez will be the U.S. Olympic coach for the throwing events in 1980.
