Of course, a tradition takes time to build and Rompola has forged ahead the last four seasons with record winning percentages and the first posteseason appearances in school history. Her initial year was billed "a season of firsts" because of the numerous records that SMU established with Rompola's fast-paced, high-pressure stylle of play. But the ink was barely dry in the record books when the 1992-93 Lady Mustangs produced their own list of "firsts". The 1993-94 team continued to carry the program to new heights, and last year's squad exploded with new records. Among the many school records set in 1994-95 were victories (21), winning percentage (.677), SWC victories (nine), SWC finish (tied for second), point scored (2,515), and rebounds (1,336). SMU had never defeated a ranked team before Rompola took over but has knocked off five in the last four years. The 1994-95 Lady Mustangs earned a No. 10 seeding in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament and defeated Southern Mississippi in overtime in the first round for the first NCAA win in school history. Rompola, who graduated from SMU with a business degree in 1983, originally played at Old Dominion where she was a two-time All-America. She played on the Monarchs AIAW national championship teams with Nancy Lieberman-Cline in 1979-80. After transfering to SMU, Rompola became the Lady Mustangs' first women's basketball All-America when whe led the 1981-82teamtoan 18-15 record. Thatwas the Lady Mustangs' last winning season until she became head coach in 1991-92 and the 18 wins were a school record until 1992-93.
