McKinney's talents for coaching and recruiting became evident in only her second season as the Owls posted a best ever record and finish in conference play with a 7-7 mark and a tie for fourth place with Houston and Texas. In her first year as the head coach of the Owls, the team also took several strides toward success. She coached Rice to the second best finish in school history with a 5-9 mark in conference play which placed them in a tied for fifth. She also became the first Rice women's coach to win her inaugural SWC game with a win over SMU on Jan. 12 1994. Touted as one of the best overall teachers of the game, McKinney came to Rice from Western Kentuckyt where she helped build a women's basketball dynasty. She left Western Kentucky after her first two seasons to take the head coaching job at Montevallo. In only her second season, she led the Lady Eagles to a 17-12 record and was named NAIA District XXVII Coach of the Year. After two seasons at Montevallo, she returned to Western Kentucky in 1986. During her nine seasons as an assistant on the Hill, the Lady Toppers posted a 212-74 overall record. They also made eight postseason appearances, including an appearance in the NCAA finals in 1992. McKinney received her B.S. degree in math education in 1979 from North Carolina State, where she earned all-America status as a forward for the Wolfpack Women. She went on to play professional basketball after graduation, spending a year with the Dallas Diamonds.
