NOTES: Meet and stadium record by Weir...Also a collegiate best for 1983...This
breaks Weir's string of two straight second-place finishes at NCAA
Championships...SMU scored 29 points in this event...Bill Green of Long
Beach State is the highest finishing native-American in this event (fourth)
...Two-time defending NCAA champion Richard Olsen finished third.
QUOTES: Robert Weir: "I had a distance goal today, but I didnft get it so I won't
say what it was. The only problem with the ring was that it was rough. I
had a problem staying in the circle. I had to get used to it. But if I
decided if I spent a lot of time thinking about the ring I would forget
about the competition, so I didn't worry about it. I was really disappointed
about not qualifying in the discus. This kind of makes up for it. In terms
of consistency this was my best series."
SCORING (AFTER TWO EVENTS): SMU 29, BYU 21, Indiana 15, Campbell and Boston
12, Washington 10, Long Beach State 9, Alabama 8, Kansas and Texas-El Paso 7. |
