Transcript Russian River Bridge Steel Combination Bridge over Russian River for North Pacific Coast Railroad at Duncan's Mills, Sonoma County, California. Designed and built by the San Francisco Bridge Company in 1890. The limited sum of money available, and the height and swiftness of the river in times of flood (forty feet rise and ten miles per hour current), required the utmost economy, and also the utmost strength in piers and superstructure. The piers are built of four rows of redwood piles, driven to a solid foundation, drawn together at top as shown in cut, thoroughly braced inside by struts and rods, and solidly sheathed with six-inch plank. The trusses are made of steel eye-bars for tension members, and Oregon pine timber for compression members, which latter are covered with galvanized iron. The floor system is of Oregon pine. The two main spans are each 202 feet 6 inches long, center to center of end pins, and the short span is 101 feet 3 inches long. The capacity is class " B" loading of Cooper's Railroad Specifications. 32
